Executive Director Job Description

-For Maternity Leave-

Key responsibilities

Transition into and out of role with current Executive director: work closely with the Executive director as she prepares for Maternity leave. Upon the completion of her Maternity leave, transition the Executive Director back into the role.

Financial administration: day to day bookkeeping operations (accounts receivable/payable, banking reports, etc.) preparation of budget projections, and financial reports; adherence to fiscal policy; administration of grant applications; maintenance and monitoring of accounting systems.

Standards and licensing: upholding any and all areas of program; licencing standards; compliance and maintenance of all regulatory and legal requirements (licensing, health and fire)

Personnel administration: recruitment, selection, orientation, performance management of staff; provision of appropriate staff supervision and substitute coverage; maintenance of written job descriptions; ensuring adherence to personnel policy; mentorship, coaching, and teambuilding.

Program administration: coordination and direction of all aspects of the Centre's operations; regular evaluation of all services provided; procurement and maintenance of program materials and equipment, based on an emergent, play-based curriculum.

Building administration: coordination and direction of all aspects of managing and maintenance of the building and grounds of the Children's Centre.

Family relations: management of waiting lists and admissions; providing regular updates and information on the Centre's policies, activities, and program philosophy; providing appropriate professional or referral services; coordination of family/educator meetings.

Community relations: development and maintenance of a positive image for the Centre; liaising with community groups, and government departments and agencies as necessary; networking with other professionals and professional groups; acting as a spokesperson for the Centre on behalf of the Board of Directors as required.

Board of Directors: advising and assisting the Board; providing information as required for effective deliberation and decision making; providing policy recommendations; providing operational and monitoring reports; aiding in development of meeting agendas; participation in committee meetings and all Board meetings; working collaboratively with the Board of Directors to define and meet fundraising goals and objectives.

Qualifications & Required Skills

Minimum of 2-year diploma/degree in Early Childhood Education

Must have a minimum Nova Scotia Level II Classification in Early Childhood Education with the NS Department of Education.

Minimum of five years administrative experience in an early childhood education setting.

Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, manage and motivate staff performance.

Demonstrates creativity, problem solving, and strategic planning.

Prior administrative experience and human resources management, with completion of a certificate in early childhood administration and/or business management.

Working knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice, the anti-bias curriculum approaches, emergent curriculum design, and inclusion strategies

Knowledge of early childhood education legislation in Nova Scotia

Compensation & Benefits: As per the Nova Scotia Early Learning and Childcare Canada Wide Agreement: https://childcarenovascotia.ca/ececompensation

Duration/Term: August 2025 to May 2027

Salary: Annual salary range $72,841.60- $75,462.40 and is determined by the Nova Scotia Department of Education, Early Learning and Child Care Wage Scale according to education and experience.
