Are you a roll-to-roll machinery innovator who dreams of designing the manufacturing lines that will revolutionize solar tech? Do you excel at turning complex equipment challenges into elegant hardware solutions? Join Rayleigh Solar Tech as the Director of Equipment Engineering, where you'll drive the design and deployment of the advanced production tools needed to scale our next-generation perovskite solar modules.
At Rayleigh, we're building the lowest-cost source of clean electrons on the planet. Backed by world-class investors and a powerhouse technical team, we're pushing the limits of deep tech to make solar radically more accessible. Our culture thrives on curiosity, urgency, and the pursuit of excellence - and we're looking for someone who shares that fire.
In this role, you'll lead the effort to architect our roll-to-roll production line from the ground up. From selecting and procuring high-tech coating and printing systems to overseeing their installation and commissioning, you'll ensure our factory of the future becomes reality. You'll collaborate across teams to tailor equipment for our unique process needs and leverage your expertise to troubleshoot and optimize every machine. Your work will lay the physical foundation that turns laboratory breakthroughs into scalable products.
If you're a hands-on engineering leader with deep technical chops, a passion for large-scale automation, and the vision to build a first-of-its-kind solar manufacturing line, we want to work with you.
What You'll Do
Design the Factory of the Future
- Own the architecture of Rayleigh's first roll-to-roll pilot line, including specification of coating, drying, patterning, and encapsulation systems.
- Develop and maintain scalable, modular equipment strategies that support the evolution from lab to pilot to full-scale production.
Lead Equipment Procurement & Commissioning
- Drive vendor selection, contract negotiation, and the full procurement process for major capital equipment.
- Manage installation and commissioning, ensuring tools are qualified and ramped with minimal downtime.
Collaborate Across Teams
- Work closely with process and R&D teams to ensure equipment enables and enhances critical process steps.
- Translate lab-scale recipes into robust equipment specs, and adapt tools to evolving device designs.
Drive Equipment Innovation
- Lead the design or customization of bespoke hardware where commercial solutions fall short.
- Integrate automation, digital monitoring, and predictive maintenance strategies to maximize uptime and capability.
Support Scale-Up and Facility Planning
- Develop equipment and layout strategies for future pilot and high-volume lines.
- Interface with facilities and operations teams to align infrastructure, capacity planning, and future expansion.
- What You Bring
Experience in Manufacturing Equipment
- 10+ years of experience (or 8+ with Ph.D.) in manufacturing equipment design, scale-up, or integration in sectors such as solar, semiconductors, or printed electronics.
Roll-to-Roll Expertise
- Deep experience with web-based systems, including coating, drying, lamination, laser patterning, and substrate handling.
Equipment Commissioning Track Record
- Proven success in specifying, purchasing, and installing complex capital equipment. Experience managing vendors, utilities, and ramp to production.
Integration Mindset
- Ability to align hardware design with upstream and downstream process requirements. Familiarity with techniques such as slot-die coating, inkjet printing, laser scribing, and vacuum deposition.
Creative Problem-Solving
