Position: Recreation Programmer

Department: Recreation Department

Responsible To: Director of Recreation & Volunteer Services

Position Summary: Responsible to assist in the proper planning, development, evaluation and implementation of assigned recreation programs. Ensure recreation services are delivered in keeping with the mission, vision and values of the Home and meet the appropriate environmental and safety standards for Long Term Care.

Responsibilities:

  • Promotes and maintains the safety of residents, staff and visitors at all times.
  • To follow recreation calendar as scheduled, making changes only with the consent of the Recreation Director.
  • Ensures accurate daily records of all individual and group programs are recorded on recreation charting system.
  • The ability to independently adapt programs to meet the needs and capabilities for all residents.

Responsibilities Continued:

  • The ability to work independently and implement programs with knowledge of outlined goals and objectives in keeping with the Recreation & Leisure Assessment for each resident.
  • Assist in the training, supervising and evaluating of students and volunteers.
  • Assist in assessing the Residents leisure interests and abilities and record information on recreation charting system.
  • Communicate observations, developments and changes that need to be made to programming to the Recreation Director.
  • To assume responsibility for the safe transport and care of residents during recreation programs and community outings.
  • To assist in the promotion, education and public awareness of recreation program to staff, residents, volunteers and families.
  • Work within guidelines of the Standards of Practices for Therapeutic Recreation Professionals.
  • Attend Resident Care Conferences as directed by Recreation Director.

Equipment and Supplies Used:

  • Assumes responsibility for all supplies while in use.
  • Report any supply needs or deficiencies to Recreation Director.
  • Ensure all vehicles are in proper working order prior to transportation of residents.
  • Report any deficiencies or malfunctions to Recreation Director.
  • Ensure proper procedure is followed when using company fuel credit cards.
  • Post daily and weekly schedule of recreation programs on communication boards.
  • Maintain clean work spaces while implementing infection control practices for safe use of supplies.
  • Ensure all food supplies for cooking and baking programs follow practices within the guidelines of safe food handling.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Recreation or Social Sciences
  • Minimum 2 year Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, Education and / or experience programming for residents with Dementia.
  • Certified in First Aid & CPR
  • Valid Class 4 Driver's License
  • Active Membership with Nova Scotia Therapeutic Recreation Association

Other Requirements:

  • Good general health which allows for the ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Physically be able to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Stand for long periods of time and do frequent bending, lifting and reaching.
  • Good personal hygiene.
  • Musical skills are an asset.
  • Food Safety Course.
  • In accordance with the organization's Police Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Police & Vulnerable Persons Record Check Clearance.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be a highly motivated self starter.
  • Strong organizational skills and utilize effective time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing workplace technologies and incorporate new learning into daily practices.
  • Ability to work as a member of interdisciplinary team.

Accountability:

  • To be knowledgeable and implement the mission statement and core values of the Home.
  • To ensure safe departmental practices and delivery of safe services for all residents.
  • To be knowledgeable on pertinent policies of the Home.
  • To ensure all monies are accounted for and petty cash slips signed when money transferred.
  • To practice and promote occupational health and safety.
  • Ensure knowledge of special diet restrictions for all residents and practice dietary precautions when programming.

Development Duties:

  • Maintain membership in Nova Scotia Recreation Professionals in Health (NSRPH) and remains current in NSRPH affairs.
  • Attend in-services, educational and training sessions for self development.
  • Participate in relevant committee work.
  • Facilitates working relationships with local community groups that provide services to residents.
  • Maintains First Aid & CPR certification.
  • Attend compulsory fire safety orientation and WHMIS programs yearly.

Hours of Work: Rotational shifts scheduled on a monthly basis that may include but not limited to days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
