At NL Health Services we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality care and service possible to the people in our communities. To do that, we employ qualified, competent and caring individuals who are dedicated to their professions and to our vision of Health and Well-Being, Every Person. Every Community.
The Cardiovascular Program of NL Health Services anticipates future career opportunities for Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology.
The Opportunity
Working independently and with a team of cardiac surgeons, nurses and medical professionals the Cardiovascular Perfusionist is a critical member of the cardiac surgery operating room team. The Perfusionist operates specialized heart-lung machines and other related equipment in the cardiac surgery operating room setting as well as various critical care areas. The perfusionist has the responsibility and accountability to provide all patient life functions while on cardiopulmonary bypass and has a direct role in the safety and well-being of the patient.
Education for the Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology is currently offered through the Michener Institute of Education at UHN/University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, or British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Prerequisite Requirements
Applicants must apply and meet the school admission requirements for the Cardiovascular Perfusion program on their own merit. Education options, entrance requirements and fees are outlined on the Michener and BCIT websites.
For Michener Institute, please visit Michener Cardiovascular Perfusion Program. The deadline to apply is February 1, 2026.
For BCIT, please visit BCIT Cardiovascular Perfusion Program. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2026.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance may be available to help offset costs associated with the Cardiovascular Perfusion program. Funding may be provided for tuition and books. A return-in-service agreement with NL Health Services will be required, and the length of the return-in-service will depend on the total amount of funding provided. The service obligation will begin once the applicant has successfully completed the certification exam and started working in the role.
If the prerequisite requirements are met, applicants will be assessed for financial support based on a combination of screening criteria such as academic grades and interview(s).
