Position Overview

As a Geoscience Intern, on secondment to the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, you will have a direct impact on assisting the development and implementation of geoscience data packages, maps, and GIS outputs addressing subsurface energy resource potential in Nova Scotia. You will work with geologists, geophysicists, and project managers to transform legacy datasets into publicly shareable data and information. You will be mentored by various team members and will gain valuable knowledge and work experience in onshore and offshore geology of Nova Scotia. If you have a background in geoscience and GIS-IT and enjoy conceptualizing, designing, and implementing organized datasets and maps for geoscience communication and research with multidisciplinary team members, we want to hear from you.

About the Opportunity

In this role, you will be seconded from Net Zero Atlantic to the DoE Energy Resource Development Branch, Subsurface Energy Development Division. This division is responsible for the development of policy, legislation, and regulations for the exploration and development of Nova Scotia's offshore and onshore resources.

In this full-time, 1-year contract term, you will report to the Manager, Research, Evaluation, and Innovation Sub-division in the DoE Energy Resource Development Branch and be responsible for:

  • Helping to develop and implement professional geoscience data packages, maps, and GIS outputs addressing subsurface energy resource potential in Nova Scotia.
  • Map and database building to support and communicate internal and external geoscience results to stakeholders from program data collected within Nova Scotia.
  • Transformation of legacy datasets into map-based interfaces and publicly shareable data and information packages for online access by external users.
  • Supporting other activities that further the DoE Subsurface Energy Development Division's mandate.
Qualifications

Required qualifications include:

  • Experience with ESRI GIS and QGIS (desktop and online) software solutions, ideally from both a geological and GIS-IT background.
  • Recent graduate (within the last 5 years) from a community college GIS program or university undergraduate or graduate geoscience program. Or a relevant combination of education.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizing information and prioritizing tasks.
  • Strong communication skills in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Independent worker, well organized, self-starter.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of geology in Atlantic Canada.
  • Knowledge of geothermal energy, offshore wind energy, offshore carbon mitigation, or subsurface storage in Atlantic Canada.
