The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Specialist, Engineer - Mine Hoist Mechanical to join our Technical Services and Asset Strategy team in Sudbury, Ontario. This is a permanent position.
As a Specialist, Engineer - Mine Hoist Mechanical, you will provide technical guidance to the Ontario operations as subject matter expert for mine hoist mechanical systems consisting of hoists, conveyances, ropes & attachments, and headsheaves.The Specialist Engineer complies with Vale's Health, Safety and Environment Procedures and Code of Ethics and Conduct using Risk Management, the Vale Production System (VPS) and industry best practices. The Specialist Engineer is expected to know, comply and uphold to high standards associated with external codes and regulations such as PEO and governmental mining regulations
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Provide technical support for hoist maintenance, operations, and reliability teams.
- Develop and implement asset strategies, maintenance practices, and safety policies.
- Certify hoist equipment, conduct audits, inspections, and troubleshoot mechanical failures.
- Support projects through scope of work development, technical specifications, supplier reviews, and commissioning.
- Drive innovation, apply new technologies, and contribute to complex engineering studies.
- Mentor and train staff, develop standards, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with stakeholders on budgets, shutdowns, and strategic investments.
- Conduct risk assessments, root cause analyses, and manage external engineering consultants.
About You
Education:
- Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering
- P.Eng. designation required
- M.Eng. designation preferred
Experience:
- 8+ years post P.Eng.
- Has working knowledge of maintenance management systems (SAP)
- Mine hoist loading and duty calculations
- Mine hoist mechanical components (bearings, gears, drums, clutches, brake systems)
- Shaft conveyances (skips, cages, counterweights, work platforms)
- Mine hoisting ropes (specifications, maintenance, geometry & harmonics)
- Headsheaves, winches, ancillary hoist equipment
- Hoist mechanical maintenance practices and procedures
- Hoist commissioning and testing
Skills:

- Mentorship: Provides direction to junior engineers and EITs; serves as a technical authority.
- Autonomy: Operates independently; leads technical processes and guideline development.

- Scope & Expertise: Recognized regional expert and technical advisor; consults with senior engineers; challenges norms; leads complex designs; sets system standards; represents company on national code/policy committees.
