Intermediate – Senior Ecologist / Environmental Scientist

Are you an experienced Environmental Scientist looking to progress your career? We're looking for an Intermediate – Senior Ecologist / Environmental Scientist to join our growing team. We are open to filling this position in our Fredericton, NB office.

At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We're an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm—not too big, not too small. We're large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team.

Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers—without getting lost in corporate bureaucracy.

You're a strong fit if you:

  • Bring sharp attention to detail across both office tasks and fieldwork
  • Tackle environmental challenges with practical, solutions-oriented thinking
  • Take initiative and drive projects forward independently
  • Approach each assignment with a sense of ownership and pride
  • Adapt quickly when field conditions or project needs change

A typical day on the job might look like:

  • Designing, coordinating, and conducting ecological fieldwork programs in terrestrial and/or aquatic environments.
  • Leading data collection, QA/QC processes, and ensuring data integrity for reporting and regulatory submission.
  • Managing and/or contributing to a wide variety of projects often including the preparation of technical reports, EIA documentation, permit applications, and environmental management plans.
  • Performing field surveys such as:
    • Breeding bird assessments
    • Vegetation identification and community classification
    • Wetland delineation and functional assessments
    • Freshwater or marine aquatic habitat assessments
    • Stream habitat evaluations
    • Benthic invertebrate and water quality sampling
  • Maintaining positive and professional relationships with clients, regulators, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders.
  • Mentoring junior staff in field techniques, reporting, and safety protocols.
  • Ensuring all field activities are completed in accordance with company and client health and safety standards.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary project teams and contributing to integrated environmental planning and assessments.
  • Performing other duties as required based on project demands.
  • Adhering to all company policies.

The good stuff you get:

  • Fair pay plus extra: competitive salary with year-end profit-sharing bonus
  • Complete health & dental coverage including vision, paramedical services, and Teladoc
  • Retirement planning made easier with a 5% employer match on your contributions
  • Paid time off (vacation and sick days) plus Employee & Family Assistance Program when you need it
  • Office year-end closure (paid time off between Christmas and the New Year)

Your background and what you bring:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in ecology, biology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • 5–10 years of professional experience in environmental science or ecology, including at least 2 years in an environmental consulting role.
  • Experience leading field programs related to terrestrial and/or aquatic ecology, including logistics, team coordination, and data management.
  • Familiarity with environmental permitting processes in one or more Atlantic provinces (NB preferred).
  • Experience supporting or leading Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).
  • Client liaison experience is required; strong communication skills and professionalism are essential.
  • Project management experience—including planning, budgeting, and team oversight—is considered a strong asset.
  • Designation or qualifications as a wetland delineator are considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and deliverables.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); experience with GIS and GPS systems is considered an asset.
  • A valid driver's license and willingness to travel for fieldwork.
