Job Title: Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist

Location: Hantsport, Nova Scotia

CKF Inc. has manufacturing plants located in British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia and the states of Iowa and Texas, manufacturing numerous types of food and protective packaging.

Partnered with Meridia Recruitment, CKF is looking for an Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist to provide leadership within their Hantsport operations.

Role Description

As the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist, you will report to the Corporate Occupational Health & Safety Manager and play a key role in ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, improving site-wide safety culture, and driving environmental initiatives. Working closely with the operations team, you will identify training needs, support incident investigations, lead safety and wellness programming, and ensure alignment with corporate and regulatory standards.

You will coordinate and deliver training, maintain safety records, manage safety equipment, and lead the facility's Joint Occupational Health, Safety and Security Committee. In addition to safety responsibilities, you will support environmental compliance and contribute to the facility's sustainability goals, including the 'Zero Waste to Landfill' initiative. Your role will also include supervising the Emergency Response Team, managing WCB-related matters in coordination with the Disability Case Manager, and supporting security and loss prevention efforts.

Qualifications

As a Safety professional, you bring a practical, people-first approach to fostering a strong safety culture. You have ideally developed your skillset by spending some time in a manufacturing or engineering environment, experience working in a unionized setting would be considered an asset. You are known for being approachable and hands-on and your style is listening and coaching over policing and penalizing. You communicate effectively at all levels of an organization, from the leadership team to the shop floor, and you understand how to roll out programs in a way that earns trust and buy-in. Detail-oriented and highly organized, you take initiative and thrive in fast-paced environments. Most importantly, you are passionate about building a workplace where safety is embedded in day-to-day operations.

Your qualifications include:

  • Post-secondary education and/or relevant experience in occupational health, safety, or environmental disciplines.
  • 3+ years of experience in occupational health and safety, ideally within a manufacturing or industrial setting; exposure to environmental compliance or sustainability initiatives is an asset.
  • Experience leading or owning safety programs, including policy development, training, and incident response.
  • Strong working knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and a demonstrated commitment to continuous learning.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and persuasion skills, with a proven ability to gain buy-in and influence culture.
  • Analytical mindset with experience using KPIs to drive continuous improvement.
  • Confident in developing and delivering training materials to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
