Organizational & Position Overview

The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA) represents the interests of Nova Scotia's agricultural community. Today its members account for well over 90% of all agricultural production in Nova Scotia and brings together farm businesses representing all aspects of primary agriculture in the province. The NSFA tackles policy issues that impact the competitive and sustainable nature of the industry and takes an active role in supporting registered farms through delivery of programs and services.

The NSFA is seeking a Communications Assistant as a full-time (28 hours per week) employee supported by external funding. The Communications Assistant is responsible for supporting and updating the organization's communication platforms, developing engaging content, supporting promotional campaigns, and assisting in member communications.

The Communications Assistant will play a vital role in amplifying the voice of the organization and promoting the value of agriculture to farmers, industry partners, and the public. They will work with the communications team to support the organization's communications efforts, with a strong focus on social media management, event coordination, website updates, campaign development and execution, and communication support. This dynamic role requires a creative communicator with strong writing, design, and digital media skills who can manage multiple projects and meet diverse communication needs. With a passion for storytelling and agriculture, the Assistant will contribute to building awareness, supporting strategic priorities, and ensuring consistent and impactful messaging across all channels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement NSFA and associated organizations brand and communications strategies to promote programs and initiatives.
  • Create and schedule engaging content for social media, ensuring it aligns with organizational goals and industry trends.
  • Maintain and update the organization's websites, ensuring timely and relevant information.
  • Support the creation of digital newsletters and manage contact lists for email campaigns.
  • Assist in the design and creation of branded materials such as graphics, brochures, flyers, and videos using graphic design tools.
  • Support event, networking, and workshop coordination, including preparing materials and handling logistics for NSFA and associated organizations.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop and execute activity-specific communications to promote awareness and engagement.
  • Help coordinate the reporting of communications metrics and feedback to inform future strategies.
  • Represent the organization at tradeshows, events, conferences, and meetings to raise awareness and build networks.
  • Support front-desk administration and respond to member inquiries.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field or equivalent.
  • Experience in a communications role, preferably in the non-profit or agriculture sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in social media management and digital marketing tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for agriculture.
  • Experience with graphic design tools and website management platforms (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Squarespace).
  • A Nova Scotia driver's license and access to a vehicle are required.

Compensation

  • 28 hours per week
  • Starting annual salary between $39,000-$44,000 (for 28hrs per week)
  • 3 weeks' vacation plus winter Holiday closure

This position is anticipated to be a one-year term.
