ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
NL Health Services – Western Zone is seeking two (2) permanent full-time salaried General Surgeons at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, NL. These positions are responsible for inpatient and outpatient General Surgery services including elective and emergency surgeries. On-call obligation is on a 1:2 rotation shared between the two General Surgeons at this site.
Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital is a 44-bed acute care hospital offering 24-hour emergency room services and predominantly General Surgery lists, with surgical services being expanded. Procedural Chronic Pain clinics are run weekly. The hospital is located approximately one hour's drive from Corner Brook where Western Memorial Regional Hospital is located.
Western Memorial Regional Hospital is a newly constructed, state-of-the-art acute care facility that opened in June 2024, serving as a 164-bed regional referral centre for Western Newfoundland and providing services to a population of approximately 80,000 people.
NL Health Services is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, and academic interests are encouraged and supported.

Within minutes of Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital you have access to scenic coastal views, walking trails, and a beautiful golf course. The area is well known for its sandy beaches including Blanche Brook and Black Bank. Nearby opportunities include boating, kayaking, and fishing, while winter months bring snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Just a short drive away you can explore the Port au Port Peninsula or take in the natural beauty of western Newfoundland — with Gros Morne National Park approximately 1.5 hours away.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
- Eligible for licensure as a General Surgeon with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certified or eligible
- Must satisfy credentialing requirements of NL Health Services Western Zone's Discipline of Surgery including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide inpatient and outpatient General Surgery services including elective and emergency surgeries
- Participate in on-call coverage on a 1:2 rotation with the second General Surgeon at this site
- Participate in Procedural Chronic Pain clinics as required
- Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary surgical team
- Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements
REMUNERATION
As per Memorandum of Agreement

- Physician Signing Bonus — CAD 150,000 + CAD 25,000 top-up
