Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Department Chairperson, the Science Technician II - Biology:

  • Provides technical and support services to the Department of Biology.
  • Prepares for, assembles and disassembles biology laboratories; ensures proper handling and correct disposal of biologically contaminated and hazardous materials generated.
  • Calculates and prepares chemical solutions (may be poisonous, carcinogenic, toxic, mutagenic), substances and specimens; pre-tests experiments, and calibrates equipment for specific labs.
  • Organizes and maintains stock cultures of living organisms in accordance to established and developed protocols. Recultures, incubates and refrigerates for long-term storage organisms and provides upkeep of invertebrates and plants.
  • Works with faculty and, where appropriate, other staff, to update and improve labs to reflect changes in available equipment, supplies or techniques to improve the pedagogical goals of labs.
  • Instructs lab users in the proper use of departmental lab equipment, procedures, protocols and methodology as required, ensures a safe laboratory environment.
  • Anticipates materials required for each course and reports such needs for inclusion into an annual list of materials for tendering or coordinates their immediate purchase, as appropriate.
  • Provides administrative support to the Chair with respect to the departmental teaching laboratories, and technical research support to faculty and students engaged in research.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Science Technician II - Biology you will have:

  • Combination of university and technical courses equivalent to 4 years related post-high school education in Biology or a related science.
  • Experience in Cell Biology, Microbiology and/or Molecular Biology techniques.
  • Minimum two (2) years of directly related work experience
  • WHMIS training.
  • Chemical background.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to function independently and as part of a team.
