We are growing!!! As we grow, we are seeking a Full Time skilled Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join the small team at our plasma collection center located on Hollis Street in downtown Halifax, NS.
Our center is open Monday to Saturday, the odd Saturday shift is to be expected.
The LPN is responsible for performing the roles of Phlebotomy and Donor Screening. The tasks include assessing donor questionnaires, weight, and vital signs and performing finger prick blood sample collection to screen total protein and hematocrit levels, performing venipuncture and monitoring the pheresis process as needed. The ideal candidate will be friendly and inviting, as they are in constant contact with our donors.

Responsibilities- Phlebotomy
Welcomes and engages donors
Set up and operation of apheresis machines for each procedure
Set up daily center duties as required
Performs phlebotomy while ensuring donor safety and comfort
Collects whole blood samples from donors when required
Monitors donors during the donation process
Collaborates with team members as required
Assesses donor for signs of an adverse reaction and takes necessary steps for immediate action including performing medical first aid as required
Disconnects the donors from the apheresis machine after donations
Educates donors on recovery period and post-procedure expectations
Responsibilities- Donor Screening
Reviews donor questionnaires
Assesses donor vital signs (weight, Blood Pressure, Oxygen, height)
Performs finger prick blood sample collection
Tests Donor's blood sample for Total Protein and Hematocrit levels
Leans on Registered Nurse to determine donor eligibility as needed
Skills
Proficient in performing phlebotomy
Strong communication and documentation skills (legible writing is required)
Ability to be instructed and to learn new skills
Excellent interpersonal skills and bedside manner and ability to develop good rapport with new and existing donors while maintaining donor confidentiality
Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures and documentation requirements
Demonstrates consistency and reliability
Maintains composure in stressful situations

Preferred competencies:
Ability to work on a collaborative team
Phlebotomy for plasma donation or whole blood collection
Education:
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Diploma is required
- Current LPN licensure in good standing with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing
Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of recent nursing experience
Experience in Plasma Pheresis is preferred
CPR training is required
