The Opportunity

The Safety Program Advisor is a technical expert in the health and safety field, leading the development of safety programs in alignment with business priorities and objectives. The Safety Program Advisor is a change champion and project lead, continuously engaging with stakeholders across the business to reinforce a safety-first culture.


Key elements of this role include:
  • Conduct research and lead the development and implementation of Safety Programs in consultation with the safety team and operations.
  • Conduct research and engage with stakeholders across the business and Safety Program Specialists to draft content for safety programs.
  • Conduct information sessions to introduce new safety programs to the safety team and operations.
  • Lead project teams and working groups in the implementation of strategic safety programs and initiatives.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on safety programs, including supporting field safety staff in safety programs implementation.
  • Act as a technical expert, ensuring safety programs are developed in accordance with regulatory requirements, Nova Scotia Power and Emera policies, and industry best practices.
  • Facilitate and participate with Safety Manual, PPE, Safe Work Practices Committees to support delivery of work within Safety Management System (SMS) and scope of committee terms of reference.
  • Support development and revision of the Nova Scotia Power Safety Management System (SMS) documentation to ensure alignment of existing procedures against program requirements and Emera standards, including developing & revising Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) & Safe Work Practices, and other documentation to support identification and control of hazards.
  • Facilitate and participate in SMS audits and safety program audits.
  • Review data against established KPI's identifying areas of concern, opportunities for improvement.
  • Track/ monitor progress of open investigations, including JOHSC investigations, including follow up with supervisors and managers with outstanding items.
  • Prepare and distribute regular communications and reporting in collaboration with the safety team, to drive health and safety performance and culture across the organization.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for software/programs associated with the Safety Management System (including but not limited to ISNetworld, Cority, SPOT, SafetyHub, Bonfire).
  • Support safety and storm activities in field and/or office as needed.

These skills will make you successful:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, Diploma or certificate in Occupational, Health & Safety.
  • Minimum 5 years' work experience in a Health & Safety environment.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Sharepoint.

Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities

  • Strong organizational skills through planning, scheduling, prioritizing, executing daily tasks and record keeping.
  • Strong verbal and written communication with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, while maintaining high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Highly organized with ability to prioritize duties during periods of high volume and meet
  • deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Outlook is essential.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to affect a safety culture mindset and improved safety performance at work sites.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated experience working independently.
  • Awareness of provincial and federal occupational health & safety legislation, regulations, and processes
