The salary scale for Professional Support 3 is based on steps that range from $68,917.73 - $91,624.25. New Professional Support may receive up to a maximum of seven steps for relevant occupational experience which is $80,254.49 annually.

This is a designated position open only to members of the Black/ African Nova Scotian community.

Responsabilités

What you will be doing…

The African Canadian Community and Cultural Liaison Coordinator works with NSCC's Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion Services office on cultural initiatives, anti-Black racism and Black inclusion projects. The Coordinator also works with Student Affairs to coordinate the delivery of services that aim to create an inclusive and safe learning environment specifically for African Canadian students.

The Coordinator will:

Work with African Canadian communities and African Canadian organizations to ensure a smooth transition of African Canadian students into NSCC. The Coordinator will work with regional Student Services Teams and the student at each stage of the student life cycle (i.e., transition in, moving through, transition out) to provide cultural supports as they manage their learning and prepare for the world of work. The Coordinator is also involved in the development and ongoing support of Black and African Canadian student networks. These cultural supports are informed by student development theory, adult education principles, in-depth knowledge of African Canadian history, lived experience, as well as an understanding of Africentric teaching and learning principles.

This position provides culturally relevant advising services and supports for African Canadian students at NSCC's eCampus. The Coordinator will work with Campus Student Services teams, building strong community connections with African Canadian Service networks, Association of African Baptist Churches, as well as organizations such as: African Canadian Services Division, Council of African-Canadian Education, Black Educators Association, Delmore Buddy Daye Learning Institute to build and support culturally responsive student services, inclusive events, and processes that recognize the unique needs of African descent students. The Coordinator will provide guidance to Student Affairs to support ongoing development of working relationships with African Canadian communities in Nova Scotia.

Although the position is located in Halifax, this role will involve working and spending time at campuses to enhance community connections and student supports.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is an undergraduate degree in a related field such as African Canadian/Black Studies, Social Sciences, Adult Education, Social Sciences, Social Work or Humanities. A combination of other post-secondary credentials may also be considered.
  • You have a minimum of 3 years of recent and related occupational experience in fields such as Student Affairs, Adult Education, Social Work, Community Development, or African Canadian/Black Youth Programming.
  • Occupational experience that includes: working with African Canadian students; building strong collaborative relationships with external organizations connected with African Canadian education; or working with African Canadian training and funding/sponsoring agencies, would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-maill (i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint) as well as video conferencing tools such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Experience using database applications such as PeopleSoft, LAMPS, or Banner would be considered an asset.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience.
  • You have experience in coordinating and facilitating workshops and services.
  • You have experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students.
  • You have extensive, in-depth experience working in and with Black/African Nova Scotian communities.

  • You have proven records and information management skills and abilities using programs such as PeopleSoft, Banner, or LAMPS
  • You have strong project management skills, a proven ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
  • You show a strong commitment to community involvement such as participating in community advisory groups, citizen engagement, volunteer work at the community, regional or provincial level.

As a condition of employment, Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete a part-time adult education program delivered by NSCC. This adult education program is a significant investment on the part of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees. To achieve regular status; all probationary, full or part-time Professional Support employees of the College must successfully complete the program within their probationary period.
