Job Description: The Rehabilitation Assistant is a support person in the rehabilitation setting, to assist the Occupational Therapist (OT) and the Physiotherapist (PT) to more effectively utilize their professional skills.
Education Required:
- Grade XII education
- Graduate of a recognized College of Physiotherapy Assistant and Occupational Therapy Assistant program
- Have a basic knowledge of medical terminology, equipment and modalities
- Police check and Vulnerable Sector Screening Request in the last 3 months is required
Competencies:
- Effective communication both written and verbal in English with residents, families and co-workers
- Strong moral and ethics along with a commitment to Privacy and Confidentiality in all aspects of the organization
- Well organized and able to complete assigned work and manage changing caseloads
- Physically fit as this position involves lifting and handling of physically and/or cognitively impaired residents(e.g. assists residents to stand; range of motion exercises, etc)
- Acts with integrity and respects the rights and dignity of all residents
- Excellent time management and multitasking skills and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision
- Problem identification and problem resolution skills
- High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability
- Reliable with good attendance and cheerful disposition
- Maintenance of a clean and sanitary environment
- Possesses exemplary Customer Service skills
- Respectful and hardworking team player
Responsibilities:
- Assist the therapists with interventions for individual residents or groups in areas of physical or functional skills
- Prepares residents for treatments and arranges therapeutic modalities for application within the parameters designated by the therapist. Carries out individualized treatments as prescribed by PT/OT
- Reports observations of residents behaviors and progress to the therapists and documents same in progress notes.
- Initial assessment of resident upon admission completed by RA when OT/PT not available
- Cleans equipment within treatment area
- Prepares and maintains treatment areas; cleans and maintains other equipment as required e.g. Red Cross wheelchairs, slings, walkers etc
- Assists with clerical duties as designated by the therapists
- Attends team meetings/rounds and participates on rehab committees/workplace committees
- Participates in staff education programs as applicable
- Completes assigned and routine tasks without direct supervision
- Recognizes residents' abilities and limitations and works within their capabilities
- Provides in-service education to support staff or the community as designated by the therapist
- Assists with the residents walking program
- Works with vendors to assist with the assessment and repair of equipment as needed
- Assists with the lift and transfer program
- Assists with procurement of assistive devices from the Red Cross; organize and maintain all documents about equipment
- Other related duties as required
