Job Description – Summer Program Assistant

NS Early Childhood Development Intervention Services (ECDIS) provide province-wide specialized services to families of young children between birth and school entry, who either have a biological risk for or a diagnosis of, developmental delay in Nova Scotia. Consultation, information, support and services designed to meet the individual needs of each child and family are delivered in the child's home and may extend to community-based programs. Services emphasize the enhancement of skills and abilities through planned interactions to promote child development and family capacity.

Early Childhood Development Intervention Services (ECDIS) also facilitate early childhood educator capacity building through the delivery of inclusion coaching to childcare and pre-primary program settings, utilizing the Pyramid Model. The Pyramid Model for Supporting Social Emotional Competence in Infants and Young Children is a conceptual framework of evidence-based practices for promoting young children's healthy social and emotional development.

Job Purpose

  • The Summer Program Assistant is responsible for the implementation of developmentally specific program activities for children with a developmental delay (birth to school age) and their families participating in drop in, playgroup and/or recreational activities.
  • The Summer Program Assistant reports to the Regional Director in their region and the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

General

  • Greet and welcome visitors and families to playgroup or drop-in.
  • Prepare, implement and document the developmentally appropriate activities during drop-in, playgroup or recreational activities under the direction of a Developmental Interventionist.
  • Make yourself familiar with each child's developmental strengths and challenges
  • Support children with developmental delays and their families in recreational activities in their communities.
  • Help keep general playgroup areas tidy and organized.
  • Coordinate any supplies needed for program activities with Regional Administrative Assistant.
  • Communicate with Parents regarding their child's time during playgroup or drop-in.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, students and parents
  • Other duties as required

Required Qualifications and Skills

Education

  • Entering Post Secondary education and/or returning to Post Secondary education in the fall.
  • Child development courses

Work Experience

  • Experience working with preschool children/preference for experience working with preschool children with diverse needs and abilities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Positive attitude and able to take initiative
  • First Aid training
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Child Abuse registry check
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) skills.
  • High level of professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills (face-to-face and on the phone).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team.
  • Dependable and detail oriented.

Rate of pay

$15.70/hr
