Job Title: Land-based Camp Outreach Officers (Summer Students). Four Seven-Week Positions.

Location of Position: (1) Corner Brook, (1) Stephenville, (2) Central Offices: Gander and Grand Falls - Windsor.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week for 7 weeks commencing the first week of July.

Rate of Pay: $17.75/hour plus 6 % Vacation Pay.

Job Description:

The Summer Students responsible for the Land-Based Camps will be assisting in the development and facilitation of week-long summer day camps for youth. The camps will take place in multiple communities throughout the Qalipu First Nation territory. Staff will be required to work with young children.

The Summer Students will be required to take part in physical activities such as hiking, running, and swimming. Assist in the delivery of various cultural education sessions for both indigenous and non-indigenous youth. The Summer Students will support, provide and maintain a safe environment for participants while facilitating the week-long summer day camps.

Responsibilities:

1. Assisting in the delivery of land-based learning and outdoor education, including interpretation, instruction and supervision to school aged children attending the summer camps.

2. Assisting with the setup and breakdown of the summer camps.

3. Assisting in the development, coordination and delivery of education and child/youth special projects as identified by the Manager of Culture and Community Outreach.

4. Promoting land-based play, cultural learning experiences, and connections.

5. Creating a positive and safe learning environment for participants.

6. Facilitating and assisting with event planning for annual cultural programs, activities, celebrations, and workshops.

7. Acting as a role model for the youth attending camp.

8. Interacting directly in a professional manner with youth, volunteers, Elders, Knowledge Holders, and fellow Qalipu First Nation staff members.

9. Communicating effectively with parents and guardians regarding their youth's experiences at camp.

10. Ensuring files are stored and maintained as per the Canadian Privacy Act, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the Qalipu Electronic Records Management System, and Quality Management Protocols for the Health and Wellness division.

11. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Applicants must have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year, be planning to attend full-time studies in the upcoming academic year and be between the ages of 15 and 29 (inclusive). Be a member of Qalipu First Nation or Self-identify as an Indigenous Person.

Experience: One (1) year of experience in community outreach and engagement, group leadership in working with youth, or working independently and meeting deadlines of program delivery.

Working Conditions: This position will have duties predominantly met during regular business hours. Travel and overnight stays may be required. Additional travel and flexibility of the work schedule are required throughout the summer.

A portion of the work will take place in outdoor environments with variable weather conditions, based on the programming, events and initiatives undertaken. Including but not limited to working in both indoor and outdoor environments, travelling to remote communities.

Physical activity is required, including walking up to 5 kilometers per day, hiking, bending, crouching and lifting to a maximum of 30 pounds.
