NL Hydro is offering a challenging and exciting opportunity to join our team. Working in a creative, fast-paced environment, you'll be part of transforming the future of the province's energy sector. Our long term Asset Management Plan includes an ambitious capital program to rebuild, renew and replace portions of our installed asset base.

We currently have an opening in our Engineering Services Division for a Civil Engineer who will specialize in Dam Safety Engineering. The position will be based at our office in St. John's but will require some travel to our field sites.

The position will work within the Dam Safety Engineering group to help manage the Corporate Dam Safety Program. The work for this position will include providing technical direction to dam safety inspectors and maintenance personnel, completing dam safety inspections, updating surveillance and maintenance standards, completing cost estimates, developing technical specifications and providing civil engineering support as required. Additional work will include the preparation of work orders, material and equipment orders and contract documents. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the development of Engineering Standards and performing construction management duties for assigned projects. Experience in hydrotechnical and/or geotechnical engineering would be an asset as is experience in civil design and construction.

Job Requirements:

You will need to bring the following:

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree with a minimum of 4 years' experience since graduation;
  • Membership in the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) association;
  • Willingness to travel approximately 7-10 weeks a year;
  • Proven and demonstrated communication skills;
  • Relevant experience in design, implementation and troubleshooting;
  • Ability to thrive as a participant within a multi-discipline team of both internal and external resources;
  • Experience in Dam Safety;
  • Experience in geotechnical and/or hydrotechnical engineering;
  • Experience in managing engineering consultant contracts;
  • Experience in design and managing construction contracts;
  • Experience in preparing project estimates;
  • Must possess and maintain an appropriate valid driver's license;
