Position Objective
To plan and implement safe therapeutic individual and group activities throughout Glen Haven Manor by completing job duties as assigned and in accordance with departmental standards and procedures.
Position Specification
Qualifications:
Grade Twelve or equivalent
Recreation/Leisure Diploma or Therapeutic Recreation Degree (preferred)
Five years experience working in long term care
Current Nova Scotia Driver's License with Car Class IV license

Position Summary
Promote and enhance resident health by organizing and conducting therapeutic activities aimed to reactivate and maintain an individual's ability and maximize their well being (physical, mental, social and spiritual), within the established guidelines for health, safety, infection control and quality management. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary health care team to provide appropriate support to residents and family by accommodating recreation programming to meet resident's needs and other scheduled activities.
Accountabilities
Complete assigned workload as per departmental procedures (including but not limited to the following):
Plan, coordinate and execute programs in cooperation with appropriate departments
Provide one:one activities for residents as required
Coordinate on monthly activity calendars as a team
Post daily programs and activities on each unit
Maintain detailed records of activity programs and participation notes
Maintain the continuity of care by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities and continuing needs
Shop for program and activity supplies
Prepare Recreation and Leisure Assessment for Interdisciplinary Care Conferences upon admission and at annual review as required
Actively reach out to new residents and residents currently not participating in activities
Orientate, mentor and supervise volunteers
Organize and prioritize allocated job tasks
Follow direction with minimal supervision
Follow documentation standards and complete applicable forms
Comply with all policies, procedures, standards and programs
Knowledgeable and respectful of Resident and Family Rights and Responsibilities
Contribute to customer service excellence at all times with residents and families
Communicate and interact professionally, positively and courteously with residents, families, visitors and staff
Apply infection control practices and standard precautions
Implement Standard Operating Procedures and Safe Work Practices
Apply proper body mechanics when performing all duties
Assist with training and mentoring new staff
Maintain effective intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships
Participate in professional development opportunities

Works safely, completing all job tasks in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures and Safe Work Practices to reduce risk of injury to self, colleagues and residents. Is alert to and promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations to the appropriate personnel. Participates in activities associated with the management of workplace safety, health and environmental affairs as endorsement of a progressive safety culture, accepting that safety is everyone's responsibility.
