DUTIES
Reporting to the Director of Physical Infrastructure and Sustainability, the Manager of Sustainability will oversee strategic sustainability related initiatives, including energy conservation, waste management, recycling, greenhouse gas emissions and composting related to the university. The position will be responsible for championing sustainability leadership, culture and programming at Memorial University and will launch, lead, and support new and current initiatives; overseeing and managing sustainability programming through the office; leading the development of sustainability policy; liaising with and advising units on sustainability initiatives; and engaging and collaborating with the university community on social purpose awareness and development of strategy to further the achievement of sustainability action goals. Working directly with the University Sustainability Committee (USC), the Manager of Sustainability will lead a strategic planning process for the development of plans, and initiatives to drive campus-wide sustainability culture including themes on leadership and culture, energy, travel and transportation, and waste management.

The Manager will actively promote the university's sustainability initiatives through the Sustainability Office, including public presentations, participation at conferences, the production of an annual report, including promotional materials and contributions to trade and other publications. Duties include developing and reporting on a sustainability action plan for the University; providing opportunities for students and the university community to become engaged in projects related to sustainability and advising and guiding those engaged in sustainability projects; developing and managing operating and project budgets and managing staff; leading the development and implementation of sustainability programs initiatives; seeking opportunities and writing proposals to secure funding for sustainable initiatives; managing and operating the community garden; and performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (5-8 years) working as a professional in a complex organization in the provision of sustainability programming inclusive of 3-5 years managerial experience; completion of a bachelor's degree in science, environmental science, business, arts or related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Completion of a graduate program in an area related to the environment or sustainability is an asset. The successful applicant will have experience developing and executing sustainability strategies as well as demonstrated experience with social purpose and social enterprise, and an understanding of university culture. The Manager must have a focus on business development with a solid understanding of business principles including reading, and writing business plans, and economic models as appropriate. In addition to technical knowledge on sustainability programs and practices, the successful candidate is expected to be deeply passionate, a culture and change maker, able to lead by example and an active listener, champion, and cheerleader. Skilled in facilitation and the provision of advice, the Manager of Sustainability is consultative and collegial in approach, a team builder; and will possess excellent writing and planning abilities with demonstrated success in proposal writing.

SALARY $76,250 - $98,840 per annum (Management and Professional)
