Vice President, Business Operations & Credit Controls
Purpose
- Provides strategic direction, leadership and oversight for Business Operations and Credit Controls primarily supporting Canadian Business Banking, ensuring Commercial Banking onboarding, credit delivery and operational processes are executed in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures, and that business initiatives and strategies are performed to optimize business performance and strengthen business controls.
Accountabilities
- Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships in the Canadian Business Bank by increasing field capacity, creating efficiencies, developing effective processes and procedures, and improving Control Environment and Control Activities, leveraging broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge to drive enhanced performance.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing revenue growth by:
- Exploring viable business opportunities to create synergies resulting in incremental revenue and/or cost reductions including, but not limited to, outsourcing and insourcing initiatives
- Collaborating on the development of system applications and workflow solutions with providers to align Divisional priorities
- Prioritizing implementation of Front-to-Back (F2B) solutions.
- Contributes to the determination of Credit Risk Appetite thresholds and limits for Canadian Business Banking, leading the communication and implementation of the Risk Appetite Framework across the business line.
- Oversees loan product management and related 1st Line operational procedures, including pricing, yield management and margin / risk adjusted margin management, across the business line. Agile MIS and Pricing management to increase Performance and deliver Revenue, as well as pricing support and review processes to ensure returns are optimized.
- Establishes and leads the Process Quality Assurance framework including creating, refining, and overseeing a strategic plan to ensure Commercial Banking is complying with credit and operational processes and so maintaining the overall quality of the commercial banking portfolio and client base.
- Leads the implementation of EO Credit Solutions strategies by:
- leading product and lending program design and execution to support Commercial Banking's segment and business strategies;
- leading and overseeing Portfolio Management day-to-day activities which includes monitoring and supporting the team with respect to credit and operational controls;
- escalating issues / obstacles / trends to executive leadership as appropriate, with recommendations / solutions.
- Leads and overseas operational activities supporting the onboarding of Commercial Banking clients, and the fulfilment of certain specialized (i.e., Roynat, Scotia Leasing, and Asset-Backed Lending) operations and lending activities to clients of this business line.
- Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank's risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank's risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
- Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
- Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops, and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vision/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
Education & Experience
- Thorough knowledge of (i) the business of financial intermediation, (ii) the Bank's Commercial Banking business lines and their related credit policies, procedures, practices, financing products and mechanisms utilized, security documentation, and (iii) legal ramifications and remedies, bankruptcy/insolvency implications related to this business line.
- Highly motivated, innovative, and results-oriented individual with excellent analytical skills.
- Highly experienced in coaching/mentoring and equitable human resource management skills.
- Superior influencing skills with excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills in order to build consensus and obtain cooperation.
- Strong understanding of commercial, corporate, and small business credit, risk scoring principles and supporting processes.
- Strong financial management, risk management and analytical skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid understanding of vendor/alliance/relationship management.
- Solid understanding of the financial services industry, with particular emphasis on multinational and corporate clients/operations.
- A solid understanding of Canadian Banking's objectives, strategies, and structures.
- Thorough understanding of Commercial Banking products and markets.
- Proven skills in risk assessment, and familiarity with compliance, operational risk and audit activities are necessary and will contribute to success.
- 10+ years of Financial/Product Management/Credit experience within the financial sector.
- Excellent communication skills in order to interact effectively with a broad range of business professionals and contacts.
- Strategic and tactical planning skills and strong communication and presentation skills.
- Excellent negotiating and influencing skills - able to influence all levels of the organization through the presentation of insight based on sound investigation and experiences.
- Post graduate education in business and/or professional accounting designation (or relevant equivalents), with emphasis in finance, math, marketing, or international business.
