The Torngat Mountain National Park - An Inuit Homeland, one of the last untamed, unspoiled places left on earth. Comprised of 9,700 square kilometers of spectacular wilderness, the Park stretches north from Saglek Fjord to the northern tip of Labrador, and westward from the Atlantic seacoast to the Québec border. It's a land of mountains, polar bears, small glaciers, and caribou, where the Inuit hunt, fish, and travel as their ancestors did.
Air Borealis is currently seeking Fixed-Term Bear Guards for the Torngat Mountains Project. This position would be located at the Torngat Mountain Base Camp for the approximate duration of July - September, 2024.
What to Expect in the Torngat Mountain National Park:
- Operate in a remote isolated camp in a stunning natural environment for nine weeks.
- Make connections and ever-lasting friendships with people from all over the world.
- Travel an experience different remarkable landmarks that all have a story to tell, by helicopter or zodiac boat.
- Hike unique Inuit ancestral grounds.
- Witness wildlife in their natural habitats.
- Sleep beneath the picturesque northern lights.
- Ensure guests have an excellent time by sharing experiences with them such as fishing, iceberg watching, swimming in pristine bodies of water, amongst many other cultural activities!
Job Duties:
- Accompany guests and staff when required outside the perimeter of the Torngat Base Camp as well as any excursions such as fishing, hiking, etc. for protection.
- Leading groups of hikers, campers, or other outdoor recreation enthusiasts on treks through rugged terrain.
- Providing information about wildlife and other natural features of the area to help visitors better understand their surroundings.
- Ability to engage in culturally relevant stories significant to the Torngat Mountains.
- Operate speedboats and zodiacs as required for camp duties.
- Ensure everyone is inside the perimeter prior to arming the fence as part of the overall Torngat Base Camp security.
- Assisting with the mobilization and demobilization of the accommodations within the Torngat Base Camp
- Arming, de-arming and monitoring of the electric bear fence to ensure operational effectiveness
- Other related duties as required
Qualifications:
- Bear Wise Training Certificate;
- Possession & Acquisition License (PAL/FAC)
- Wilderness First Aid Certification
- Ability to adapt and adjust to changing weather conditions, unexpected challenges, and other unforeseen circumstances.
- Ability to interact with staff and guests to ensure an overall positive and safe experience
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergent situations with the overall aim and objective of the safety and well-being of the guests and staff
- Ability to manage under pressure and to balance multiple priorities;
- Knowledge of Inuit culture and practices
