Higher Talent is currently seeking dynamic and passionate candidates for the position of Executive Director for our client, MusicNL, located in St. John's, NL.

MusicNL is the music industry association of Newfoundland and Labrador! The purpose and objectives of the music industry association are the promotion, encouragement, and development of the music industry of Newfoundland and Labrador in all its forms, whether written, recorded, or in live performance. THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership, direction, and overall management of the association to advance its mission and objectives. The role requires an understanding of the music industry, business strategy, board governance, excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to foster relationships with key stakeholders. Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Leadership: Implement the strategic vision for the association in alignment with the interests of its members and the broader music industry. Lead the development and execution of long-term and short-term goals and objectives.
  • Board Relations: Work closely with the association's board of directors, providing regular updates, co-facilitate board meetings with the Chair, and ensuring sound board governance practices, policies, and effective communication.
  • Team Leadership: Build, lead, and coach a high-performing team, fostering a positive, engaged, and collaborative work culture. Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities for team members. Develop and implement all related HR policies, procedures, and procedures.
  • Membership Engagement: Work to grow and retain association membership. Develop and implement programs and initiatives to meet the needs of diverse members within the music industry.
  • Financial Management: Oversee the financial health of the association including budget development, timely financial reporting, sound internal controls, and fiscal responsibility. Maintain existing relationships with funding partners, and identify and pursue funding opportunities, sponsorships, and partnerships to support the association's mission and mandate.   • Risk Management: Identify, assess, monitor, and limit risk exposure associated with financial, operational, cybersecurity, reputational challenges, etc. through implementing strategies to minimize or mitigate their impact on the association.
  • Program and Event Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of events including the annual music celebration week conference, and programs that promote the association's mission and provide value to its members. Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure successful implementation of programs.
  • Advocacy and Representation: Serve as the primary spokesperson and representative of MusicNL, advocating for the interests of its members at various levels including government, industry, and public forums. Build and maintain relationships with government officials, industry leaders, and other relevant stakeholders. Learn about MusicNL's advocacy here.
  • Industry Trends and Research: Stay abreast of industry trends, market dynamics, and legislative changes that may impact the music industry and the association's objectives. Commission and utilize research to inform decision-making and strategy.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience. Experience in general arts, music, or related field would be an asset.
  • University degree in a relevant field, with a preference for additional qualifications or experience at the executive level.
  • Exceptional strategic leadership and operational skills including demonstrated experience in planning, administration, and evaluation of financial resources.
  • Growth mindset to elevate the impact of the association, to expand membership, and to diversify, increase and stabilize organizational funding.
  • Demonstrated experience in member relations, advocacy, public relations, and collaborative government relations.
  • Knowledge of the music industry including industry dynamics, trends, and key players would be considered an asset.
  • Well developed communication, negotiation, interpersonal, media relations, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional networking and relationship building skills with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong project management, organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Excellent problem solving, decision making, priority setting, and critical thinking skills.
