Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey's Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Mine Maintenance department is responsible for the maintenance on all mobile equipment at the Voisey's Bay Mine Site. The department attends to a variety of surface and underground equipment including but not limited to Dozers, Excavators, Haul Trucks, Drills, Loaders, Jumbos, Bolters, LHD's, etc. Additionally, the department is responsible for supporting the entire light vehicle fleet including Pick-Up Trucks, Semis, Forklifts, and other equipment. The Mine Maintenance department is comprised of highly skilled Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians, Automotive Technicians, Truck and Transport Technicians, Welders, and Engineers.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey's Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Maintenance Apprentice – Welder to join our Surface Mine Maintenance Department in Voisey's Bay, NL. This is a permanent position.

This position is based at the Voisey's Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation.

As a Maintenance Apprentice – Welder you will be responsible for performing preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on a diverse fleet of mobile equipment as well as assisting other maintenance employees as required. The Maintenance Apprentice – Welder will also be responsible for repairing, troubleshooting, adjusting, overhauling, servicing, and maintaining mobile equipment. Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Perform preventive checks according to preventive maintenance plans on Surface and Underground Mobile equipment including Loaders, Excavators, Drills, Conveyors, Haul Trucks, any other Mobile and fixed plant equipment for proper performance defects and malfunctions.
  • Complete breakdown, corrective, and minor repairs.
  • Inspect, examine, and test parts and equipment in order to recommend the extent and nature of the work to be done.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturer's specifications and the functional needs of the operations.
  • Adjust, repair, or replace defective parts and components of the equipment systems.
  • Clean, lubricate, and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment.
  • Fabricate equipment, parts or components to engineered specifications.
  • Conduct final inspections to ensure that work detailed on the work order has been completed to meet safety standards.
  • Provide feedback improvement suggestions to the supervisor and planner and implement those that are within your ability.
  • Improving equipment availability and efficiency through quality maintenance and failure analysis.

About You

Education:

  • College diploma in Welding.
    • Must qualify or be registered as an apprentice in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 months of welding experience in work and school.
  • Experience working in a mobile equipment maintenance department.
  • Previous mining experience will be considered an asset.
