The Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS)

The Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS) assists the university in fulfilling its responsibilities under the NB Occupational Health and Safety Act. This includes collecting and disseminating information on workplace hazards, evaluating work environments, assessing risks, and generally advising on safety in the workplace. EHS provides oversight for federal licensing and reporting related to nuclear, radioactive, biohazardous and cannabis research. The office manages chemical and other hazardous waste identification and disposal; including accurate inventories; provides on call support for any related accident or incident (including liaising with provincial and federal investigators) and performs incident investigation.

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 36.25 hours per week

Salary Range: $46,574 - $58,222 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Environmental Health & Safety Manager, the Chemical Safety Officer is responsible for oversight and administration of the University-wide chemical inventory and accompanying software package (Chematix). This includes annual reconciliation of inventories during safety audits, preparation of municipal, provincial and federal reports on chemical inventories, and other related support. The Chemical Safety Officer promotes a healthy safe work culture through the development and management of policies and programs, workplace assessments, audits, training, and awareness. They will liaise as required with the Joint Health and Safety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, and others while providing input on planning and policy.

  • Support university-wide compliance and performance with respect to safety.
  • Oversee and administer the University-wide chemical inventory.
  • Reconcile inventories during safety audits.
  • Organize and oversee the collections of waste neutralizing/digestion/packing each year.
  • Assist with the preparation of municipal, provincial and federal reporting on chemical inventories and other related support.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for chemical concerns, and back-up for the Manager in their absence.
  • Respond and assist as is practical during incidents on either campus involving chemicals.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry.
  • Related laboratory experience, preferable in a university environment.
