Short Term Technician Placement - Huntsman Aquatic Biosciences

Location: Huntsman Marine Science Centre, St Andrews, NB
Commitment: 37.5 hours per week for up to six months. Some flexibility regarding start and finish dates but employment to take place between September 2024 and March 2025.
Rate of Pay: $17 per hour (accommodations may be available on the Huntsman campus at a negotiated monthly rate).

Eligibility: This position will be part funded by an internship program. To meet the funding requirements applicants must not have previously worked at Huntsman Marine (exceptions may be made for previous co-op students), aged 30 or under at the start of the position, be a graduate from a post-secondary institution. They must also be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have been granted refugee status.

Background: The Huntsman Marine Science Centre (St. Andrews, New Brunswick) is a not‐for‐profit charity organization with a focus on ocean conservation and marine education and research. This position is to assist with duties in the Huntsman's Taxonomy and Biodiversity Lab, particularly with specimen organization, data management, photography, microscopy, and tissue sampling for the project 'Creating a barcode reference library for Atlantic Canadian Marine Invertebrates'. There may be occasional opportunities to assist with fieldwork or outreach work. There will be opportunities to gain experience in marine invertebrate identification.

Responsibilities:

  • Organizing and cataloguing biological specimens
  • Preparing and analyzing biological samples for taxonomic analysis, including microscope work and slide preparation.
  • Uploading of specimen data and images onto the Barcode of Life Database
  • Tissue sampling for barcoding.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and organized work environment at all times.
  • Ensure all health and safety procedures are adhered to.
  • Assist in any other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate of university or college in STEAM subject related to the position.
  • Proven initiative and self‐motivated.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Good IT skills - Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work well independently or cooperatively with a team.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (in English).

Additional Assets:

  • Education or experience in Marine Biology.
  • Experience with identification of marine life (ideally from the east coast of Canada).
  • Experience of laboratory work
