At CBCL Limited, we are a successful, dynamic, growing engineering and environmental consulting firm. We have an exciting opportunity for an Automation & Controls Specialist to join our team in our Halifax office overlooking the beautiful downtown waterfront.

CBCL Limited is inviting qualified candidates to apply for an Automation & Controls Specialist position located in our Halifax office. The Automation Specialist will work in the Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering department with designers and engineers on projects throughout the Atlantic Provinces. The successful candidate will have exemplary communication and problem-solving skills combined with a sound attention to detail.

Reporting to the Group Lead, Automation & Controls, the Automation & Controls Specialist will be responsible for programming & commissioning PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications either directly for clients, or coordinated with general contractors and other CBCL departments as part of multidisciplinary construction projects. They will assist design engineers in the selection of ICS/SCADA hardware and software. While on site it is expected that the successful candidate can setup PLC, HMI, Windows based computer, and network hardware to form a complete control system.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to company design standards, details, master specifications, quality and other standards as part of a continuous improvement environment;
  • PLC, HMI, and SCADA application programming;
  • On-site commissioning and start-up of PLC, HMI, and SCADA control systems, including communication system(s);
  • Develop and/or review control system network architectures using industry standard protocols and topographies, including both ethernet and serial protocols;
  • Document development, planning, and/or execution of commissioning and start-up activities;

Your Capabilities and Credentials:

  • Five (5) plus years of experience in Automation and Controls;
  • Eligibility for registration with TechNova or Engineers Nova Scotia;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and experience in its application;
  • Experience commissioning control systems and troubleshooting I/O;
  • Experience with the following:
    • VFD configuration (Allen Bradley, ABB);
    • Programming PLCs and RTUs (Allen Bradley, Schneider Electric);
    • Programming HMIs (Allen Bradley, FactoryTalk View ME, Schneider Electric, GE, Maple Systems, C-More);
    • Programming SCADA (Trihedral VTscada, FactoryTalk View SE & Historian);
  • Experience with EtherNet/IP, Modbus (TCP, RTU), DF-1 communication protocols;
  • Experience setting up ethernet and serial communication networks, including point-to-multipoint UHF radio, hardwired ethernet & fiberoptic, and cellular;
  • Experience with cybersecurity or OSIsoft PI system would be considered an asset;
