CBCL is continuously on the lookout for talented individuals to join our dynamic and talented Bridge team in our St. John's office. We would also consider candidates in our other offices, with preference for Halifax, Fredericton, or Ottawa.

Leverage your significant experience in the design, inspection, rehabilitation and construction of bridge structures to help us succeed. Join a growing team that includes university guest Lecturers, CHBDC and TAC committee members, and contributors to award-winning civil infrastructure projects. As our ideal candidate, you have expertise in all areas of Bridge Engineering and are excited to lead young teams to produce quality work, while leaning on the support of other experienced members of the CBCL's Bridge Group.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Detailed Design of new bridge structures;
  • Structural Evaluation of existing bridges, including but not limited to, slab on girder bridges, concrete frames and historic truss structures;
  • Condition Assessment of existing structures (including OSIM based inspections)
  • Management of Bridge Group-led projects
  • Mentor junior staff and carry out QA/QC on their work;
  • Finite Element Analysis (LUSAS Bridge Preferred);
  • Develop Conceptual Option Reports;
  • Constructability Analysis;
  • Work closely with in-house disciplines including but not limited to geotechnical, highway, civil, water resources, coastal, environmental, cost estimation, climate change, mechanical and electrical;
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors and colleagues;
  • Create and vet spreadsheets and new work flow tools to help facilitate the team's work;
  • Contribute ideas to potential new business markets for the Bridge Group;
  • Assist with, contribute to, and sometimes lead proposals for new work;
  • Write technical reports;
  • Develop technical specifications;
  • Develop Estimates of Probable Costs;
  • Contribute to our ongoing relationship with universities;
  • Continue to grow your expertise through work but also by seeking out external educational opportunities;
  • Be open to preparing conference papers and presentations when opportunities arise; and
  • Contribute to the team environment by assisting colleagues when needed.

Your Capabilities and Credentials:

Requirements

  • Registration or eligibility for registration with provincial Engineering Associations;
  • No less than five years (intermediate)/ten years (senior) structural engineering experience with no less than three years (intermediate)/five years (senior) focus on bridge engineering;
  • An appreciation for considering construction during design;
  • Thorough knowledge of current design codes of practice and the CHBDC (CAN/CSA S6-19);
  • Bridge inspection experience with a strong understanding of material conditions and defects.
  • The ability to work well with drafting personnel;
  • Familiarity with both concrete and steel bridge design, in the short and medium span range;
  • An understanding of the commitment required to meet project schedules and budgets;
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to write effective reports and proposals.

Strong Assets:

  • Familiarity with Atlantic Canadian and/or Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications;
  • Experience with multiple inspection methodologies, notably OSIM;
  • Familiarity with US and/or European codes;
  • Interest and willingness to mentor and effectively develop the skills of Junior Engineers and Technologists;
  • The ability to lead the design on a bridge project from conception through construction;
  • Strong analytical and computer modeling skills (LUSAS Bridge preferred);
  • Ability to effectively represent the company at the client level.
