Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with Irving Shipbuilding Inc. (ISI), to recruit a Director, Human Resources Centres of Expertise, to join their team in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Irving Shipbuilding is the most modern shipbuilder and in-service ship support provider in North America, having constructed over 80% of Canada's Navy Vessels at sea today. Over the next 30 years, Irving's shipbuilders will construct over 20 modern patrol ships and surface combatants for the Royal Canadian Navy, as part of the largest defense procurement project in Canadian history.

Role Description:

Reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources, the Director, Human Resources Centres of Expertise will serve as a senior member of the HR leadership team. Working closely with many stakeholders, the successful candidate will lead a team of HR professionals from various HR disciplines including talent management, talent acquisition, organizational design, organizational effectiveness, compensation, and workforce planning and analytics. The Director will lead continuous improvement and strategic initiatives within the respective expertise centers, ensuring alignment with the overall business strategy.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • In collaboration with the Vice President, establish the strategy for the respective centers of expertise, working closely with other key members of the senior leadership team to influence business objectives;
  • Lead and manage teams from a variety of HR disciplines (centers of expertise), including talent management, talent acquisition, organizational design, organization effectiveness, compensation, and workforce planning and analytics;
  • Maintain close relationships, coordination, and collaboration with senior leaders and union representatives to meet all program requirements, and to ensure organization-wide strategies are successfully implemented;
  • Develop the capability of Irving Shipbuilding's HR team as a whole, providing sound and engaging leadership;
  • Adeptly analyze industry trends, HR best practices, and evolving technologies to proactively manage HR-related issues, maximize organizational effectiveness, and further enhance organizational culture;
  • Lead the people strategy to ensure business alignment, achievement of key metrics, and minimization of risk;
  • Use strategic problem-solving and sound judgement to anticipate, communicate, and navigate challenges and opportunities within a complex work environment.

Your Qualifications:

As the ideal candidate, you are an ambitious, entrepreneurial and strategic human resources leader who has proven to deliver results, and effectively lead a team of HR professionals. You have experience developing and executing continuous improvement and strategic initiatives that span several HR functions and are comfortable working in a unionized environment. You are confident presenting new ideas to members of the senior leadership team, letting data drive your decisions. Most importantly, you are passionate about driving HR initiatives to support the development and success of the business.

Qualifications include:

  • 10+ years' experience in Human Resources including strong leadership experience;
  • Post-secondary education, preferably with a concentration in Human Resources, or other related discipline with relevant experience will also be considered;
  • Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) or Master of Industrial Relations degree (MIR) would be considered a strong asset;
  • CPHR designation would be considered a strong asset;
  • Depth of Generalist HR experience, covering a variety of HR competency areas;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to achieve required objectives;
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, problem-solving, planning, and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrated use of sound judgment and reliable decision-making;
  • A high degree of self-motivation, professionalism, and business acumen.
