Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with We'Koqma'q L'nue'kati to recruit a Senior Director of Human Resources to join their team in Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia.

We'koqma'q L'nue'kati is a progressive community on the rise, situated between Port Hawkesbury and Baddeck, and bordered by the Bras D'or Lakes and Skye Mountain. A tranquil and picturesque place to call home, the community itself is comprised of 829 hectares of land, rich in both hunting and fishing grounds that the Mi'kmaq people have proudly maintained for many years. Over the past decade, the Chief and Council along with the management team at We'koqma'q L'nue'kati have been focused on building a self-sustaining economy for their community members. Role Description:

Reporting to the CEO, the Senior Director of Human Resources will be responsible for overseeing and providing leadership to all human resources functions, including recruitment, performance management, employee relations, succession planning, compensation, occupational health and safety, and more. While leading the strategic direction of the entire HR function, the Senior Director of Human Resources will also provide day-to-day support and leadership to the Director of Human Resources, and the Director of Employment & Training.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide oversight and leadership to employees within the Human Resources department, assigning tasks, reviewing work, and providing performance feedback;
  • Provide expertise and counsel to the CEO, Management, and Council on Human Resources policies and other personnel matters;
  • Coordinate, prepare, and manage the budget assigned to the Human Resources department, monitoring and speaking to utilization throughout the fiscal year;
  • Lead and improve the performance management process for all employees across the organization, coaching and training leaders on how to appropriately handle employee performance issues;
  • Oversee full-cycle recruitment, employee motivation, and retention initiatives, including the development and execution of orientation programs for new hires;
  • Lead the development and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements for all operations, ensuring compliance and that all staff are trained in OHS requirements/policies;
  • Support conflict resolution and assist with resolving employee relations issues;
  • Develop strategies to enhance employee engagement and productivity, fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture;
  • Build team leadership through effective communications with the management team, regularly chairing meetings with department Directors to promote ongoing awareness of Human Resources policies;
  • Serve as the link between the CEO and department Directors, keeping the CEO informed on any issues or concerns impacting the management team;
  • Oversee the design and administration of competitive compensation and benefits packages, through salary benchmarking and monitoring of market/industry trends.

Lived experience as an Indigenous person, and/or experience working within an Indigenous environment would be considered a strong asset, however not a mandatory qualification. We encourage and welcome all qualified candidates to apply.

Qualifications include:

  • Post-secondary education, preferably with a concentration in Human Resources, or other related discipline with relevant experience will also be considered;
  • 10+ years' of Generalist experience in Human Resources, with at least 5 of those years being in a leadership/management capacity;
  • CPHR designation would be considered a strong asset;
  • Indigenous-Based Cultural Sensitivity and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training would be considered a strong asset;
  • Strong knowledge of current employee rights, laws, and regulations throughout Canada;
  • Strong understanding of labour standards, and Occupational Health and Safety best practices;
  • High level of professionalism, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information;
  • Excellent emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity, coupled with strong business acumen;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications, and comparable computer systems/programs.
