Job Title: Environmental Technician

Location: Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick

Employment type: seasonal position; 8-12 weeks with possibility of extension

Salary: $19/hr; 37.5 hours a week

Job Purpose and Organization Description:

Eastern Charlotte Waterways (ECW) is an environmental not-for-profit research organization based in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick. The technician will work with the Aquatic Science team in research and data collection for a series of environmental projects, both freshwater and marine. Projects include biodiversity assessments, watershed monitoring, and monitoring for invasive species and species at risk, among many others. Students also have the opportunity to learn about and train on topics and skills that interest them.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Assistance with field work, including carrying equipment, recording data, collecting samples, handling fish and invertebrates, and more. Field work may take place in remote areas and sometimes requires: boating or ATV access, sampling in adverse or varying weather conditions, walking for extended periods of time, flexible hours, etc.
  • Data management including recording in the field and inputting in excel. Sample management including labelling, storage, sending, and receiving.
  • Independent research on subjects related to invasive species, species at risk, watershed monitoring, fisheries, and more.
  • Assistance in proper use, maintenance, and storage of field equipment.
  • Other duties might include: taking photos for social media, assistance with drone exercises, participating in online training or courses, and more.

Qualifications:

  • Formal education or training in biology, environmental technology, or a related discipline.
  • Preference will be given to applications with prior experience in field work, independent research, and data management.
