Introduction:

The Senior Communications Associate plays a key role in achieving ICES' communications objectives through planning, strategy development, content creation and implementation of a broad range of related communications activities, for both internal and external audiences. Additionally, the associate is a key contributor to media and public relations efforts of ICES and the successful promotion of our work and its impact.

Responsibilities of the position include, but may not be limited to:

  1. Support the ICES communications strategy by acting as an integral member of the communications team, providing input and expertise towards all communications initiatives;
  2. Lead the development and implementation of impactful internal and external communications strategies that support corporate goals and activities;
  3. Develop, review and revise engaging digital content for owned and paid media channels and internal audiences;
  4. Work collaboratively with the Senior Communications Associate (Paid Media) on the media and public relations efforts of ICES and the successful promotion of our work and its impact;
  5. Lead the development of executive remarks, speeches, presentations and thought-leadership pieces;
  6. Develops and implements analytic measurement, evaluation tools and mechanisms to monitor owned and paid media coverage to demonstrate positive organizational impact and share results with the ICES Executive team, the Board and broader ICES community;
  7. Works collaboratively with ICES scientists, Sites and partnering institutions to support their efforts and work;
  8. Builds and nurtures collaborative, interdepartmental relationships to facilitate information sharing and effective communications support;
  9. Protects the integrity of the ICES brand and ICES' reputation through well-established professional relationships and ongoing interaction with stakeholders, researchers and partnering institutions;
  10. Apply an understanding of the ICES mission, vision and values to assess the communications needs of our external stakeholders and lead the development of messages and mediums to best deliver on those needs;
  11. Preparing, editing and rewriting copy to improve accuracy and readability; checking copy to detect errors in punctuation, syntax or spelling and make necessary changes; verifying dates, facts, statistics and other information before publication;
  12. Guides and reviews all aspects of the creative process for publications, digital content and promotional products;
  13. Participates in committees and project teams as required;
  14. Other duties as may be assigned within the scope of this position.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field;
  • Five or more years of directly related communications experience; healthcare sector or research sector experience is an asset;
  • Proven track record of contributing to media and public relations efforts;
  • Ability to research, analyze, plan and execute in the areas of: message development, communications vehicle development and communications effectiveness measurement;
  • Needs to be a self-starter, creative/idea-generator and experienced in taking complex content and making it accurate, concise and impactful;
  • Superior editing, proofreading and writing skills; proven technical and content marketing skills;
  • Ability to adapt style for specific mediums, voices and formats and distill complex technical content for a general audience;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic communication plans;
  • Understanding of research, medical and epidemiological terminology, data driven story-telling and familiarity with the health care system and key stakeholder groups is an asset;
  • High-level attention to detail with results-oriented and effective time management skills;
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure to manage multiple competing priorities within tight deadlines;
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals across a wide range of functions and levels across the organization, as well as with external partners and stakeholders;
  • Intermediate to advanced skill level with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Outlook);
  • Video production/editing; photo editing; and creative design skills/program experience is an asset.

This is a full-time permanent opportunity.
