Provides assistance to Environmental Services or Natural Resources staff in project and field study work. Provides a research function on a variety of routine projects.
What you will do:
1. Assists the Environmental Services or Natural Resources staff in routine portions of field studies and inspections such as setting up and/or servicing test, monitoring and related equipment, taking measurements and samples, performing tests, observing and recording contractor methods/practices, test sample results and field notes; ensures supplies required for field trips and laboratory work are available and maintained.
2. Under direction researches, assembles and assesses biological, physical and socio-economic/environmental data from a variety of sources; prepares technical reports on assigned topics; reviews field reports or other literature and assembles specific information to assist Environmental Services or Natural Resources staff to prepare reports.
3. Liaises with other agencies to discuss and prepare regulatory and other requirements for assigned projects.
4. Performs a variety of administrative, laboratory and office duties such as preparing and examining biological samples, compiling data from aerial photos using stereoscopes, planimeters or other laboratory equipment, preparing and processing invoices and/or payment and expense documentation and preparing and entering data from various sources such as field notes, data cards, or recording charts into a computer.
5. Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities required:
  • Research and analytical skills.
  • Good knowledge of fish biology or environmental handling, storage and disposal methods.
  • Good knowledge of provincial and federal fisheries acts or environmental regulations.
  • Ability to prepare and understand technical reports.
  • Basic knowledge of safety issues for field work.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation and effect on fisheries caused by BC Hydro generating facilities.
  • Good written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good computer spreadsheet and database applications skills.
  • Ability to operate a boat.
  • Possess a valid BC driver's licence.
What you bring
Completion of a Technologist Certificate in Fish Biology or Environmental Management from an institute of technology. The successful candidate will have approximately 12 months experience in the field as an assistant.

This is a temporary role. The length will be approx. 6 months less a day.
