Position Summary:

Ulnooweg Education Centre (UEC) is recruiting Camp Counsellors to support its summer camps. The Camp Counsellor will work under the supervision of the Camp Leader to deliver Ulnooweg's Summer programming. During these multi day events, the Camp Counsellors are responsible for chaperoning youth and ensuring activities run smoothly and on schedule. This helps create a safe and fun environment for youth to learn and play. The summer camp programs are offered at a variety of sites across Mi'kma'ki

Responsibilities:

  • Organize activities and educational sessions for youth.
  • Work with other counselors to make sure the camp itinerary stays on track.
  • Follow and enforce safety rules during outdoor activities and nature excursions.
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the camp, including meals, activities and daily routines.
  • Create relationships with camp participants, provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Ensure a welcoming environment.
  • Foster a friendly environment where youth can be themselves and explore their culture.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with children in a camp or educational setting.
  • Experience working directly with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and youth.
  • Ongoing or completed post secondary education is an asset.
  • Current certification in Emergency First Aid and CPR an asset.
  • Class 5 vehicle license is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • 24/7 availability may be required.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75lb.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Hazards associated with working in a seasonal program setting.
  • Long hours, shift work
  • Prolonged standing, walking, lifting, squatting, and bending.
  • May perform work in adverse weather conditions including heat, cold and inclement weather.
