General Purpose of this Position:

The General Manager has a high degree of credibility from working in key roles in a Mining Project Delivery environment, uses their broad contacts within the mining industry to develop new client relationships, develops a positive, diverse, and progressive work environment, resulting in high quality group performance and financial viability.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Health and Safety

  • Be passionate about safety and lead by example.
  • Work in compliance with all company Health and Safety rules and regulations.
  • Be aware of any health and safety hazards or infractions and report same to Health and Safety Department.
  • Participate in the office safety program.

Key Accountabilities:

New Business Development

  • Redefine Merit's brand as a provider of Mine Project Delivery Services and Studies.
  • Develop and manage a list of existing and high potential projects and clients, including such information as project description (underground, open pit, ramp or shaft access etc. mining method etc.), ore type, categorization as junior, intermediate, or major, location, phase of project, dollar value, contact information.
  • User your strong Network within defined market or geographic area to develop and maintain a robust pipeline of opportunities.
  • Develop contacts in mining company procurement groups, including making presentations as required to get Merit Project Delivery and Study Services onto their bidders lists for upcoming projects.
  • Lead staff to ensure that prerequisites (prequalification or getting on a vendor list) are fulfilled within a timely manner.
  • Develop and implement a marketing strategy using advertising, conference presence, presentations, website development.
  • Build and market new offer sheets that bundle existing Merit and Cementation Project Delivery and Mine Studies services.
  • Leverage the Merit and Cementation teams to develop proposals that speak to the Client's needs, concerns, and objectives. Highlight the "Best for Project" philosophy.

Business Management

  • Instill Merit's business focus into all Merit staff: To provide premium Project Delivery Services and Studies to the Mining industry.
  • Collaborate with the other Cementation companies, ensuring consistency in marketing and business development, seeking out mutually beneficial projects and clients. Leverage both Merit and Cementation service offerings and personnel into appropriate opportunities and projects.
  • Monitor industry market trends, and continuously evolve the companies offering and matching resources accordingly.
  • Maintain strong relationships with our clients, by serving as a Project Sponsor for all key projects.
  • Maintain viability of the company, by matching the composition of the staff to the resource forecast, on a move forward basis, including strategic management of the recruiting and group rationalization processes required.
  • Monitor technology trends and ensure that the company toolbox and skillset represents industry best practice. When the adaptation of new software platforms are required, drive the process forward, including: the review of platform choices; development and approval of business plans that validate value; purchase; training and implementation plans. As much as possible, align the Merit toolbox with the Cementation toolbox.
  • Prepare Annual Business Plans, that include revenue forecasts and projected overhead costs, and demonstrate company viability.
  • Submit Monthly Financial Reports.
  • Initially, supervise all personnel within the Merit company. As the group grows, minimize the number of direct reports, by developing group managers that would report to you, but that would become the supervisor for their individual groups.
  • Develop and maintain a revenue forecast, that includes work in hand, current proposals, and strong potential leads. The workload forecast should include the current and next fiscal years.
  • In parallel with the Revenue forecast, develop a resource forecast, also including work in hand, current proposals, and strong potential leads, that includes the current and next fiscal years.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Using your mature business acumen, submit proposals, negotiate, and close business deals.
  • Ensure that all contracts and agreements comply with the Murray and Roberts due diligence requirements, by engaging Cementation's Contract Specialist for review.
  • Review and approve all business expenses, including setting up delegation of authority within the group managers as appropriate.
  • Review and approve all direct report timesheets.
  • Support the management of existing Client relationships to ensure continued engagement and identification of expanded scope of work.
  • As a member of the Cementation group of companies BD management team, participate in monthly meetings to discuss company issues and set strategic direction for the company.
  • Attend industry functions, such as events and conferences, and provide feedback and information on potential opportunities and market trends.
  • On an interim basis, serve as a Project Manager, employing industry best practice tactics and Earned Value principals to deliver projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Focusing on extraction and/or processing, knowledge of mining, mine plant construction, and mine development methodologies.

  • Excellent and relevant network.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to prepare proposals and make presentations.
  • Ability to work independently, but with a preference for working collaboratively.

  • Leads by example, resulting in a strong group worth ethic.
  • Knowledge of applicable mining regulations, safety codes, and acts.
  • A second or third language would be an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office software applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, MS Project, and Outlook.

Education and Experience:

  • Engineering degree or Technology diploma, in a related field of study.
  • PMP designation would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in Project Delivery of Mining projects.
  • Minimum 5 years in a Senior Management Project Delivery role.
  • Minimum 5 years in a business development role.

Travel Requirements:

  • This position has the requirement for moderate travel.
  • Travel period may range from one day to several weeks.
  • Travel may include out of country assignments.
