Automation Engineer

Reports to: Lead Discipline Engineer - Electrical

Hybrid Work Schedule: Remote Option: Monday & Friday / In-Office: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Our electrical design work includes MV/LV power distribution, automation, and communication systems for surface and underground mining facilities, buildings, mine shafts, hoists, ventilation, and material handling systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Health and Safety

  • Work in compliance with all Health and Safety rules and regulations for Cementation.
  • Be aware of any health and safety hazards or infractions and report same to Health and Safety Department.
  • Ensure all applicable safety codes and regulations are met by appropriate design and use of technology.
  • Be a champion for safety, advocating safe behaviour while incorporating safety into the designs produced by the group.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for the design of process control and communication systems with a focus on PF studies, conceptual design, and detailed design for mines.
  • Be the Engineer of Record (EoR) of the projects and collaborate with designers, subconsultants, contractors, project services teams, and the clients.
  • Lead the Basic and Detail designs of instrument, process control, and communication systems.
  • Prepare construction methodology, process control functional description, automation architecture, and be accountable for engineering deliverables.
  • Produce project design criteria, specifications and Datasheet, RFP SoW documents; Complete technical bid reviews, and recommend vendors.
  • Manage, review, and approve vendor drawings, DCS and PLC programming; attend FAT's, and SAT's.
  • Work in compliance with all Health and Safety rules and regulations for Cementation; Ensure all applicable safety codes and regulations are met by appropriate design and use of technology.
  • Participate in design, operability, constructability, and HAZAN and HAZOP reviews.
  • Conduct peer engineer review.
  • Technical support during site construction and commissioning.
  • Provide material and engineering cost estimates to support marketing and proposal submissions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Travel Requirements:

  • This position may have the requirement for occasional travel to our project sites and offices. Travel period may range from one day to several weeks and may include overseas assignments.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Has no direct reports, however, will direct, oversee, check, and stamp the work of EIT's.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in electrical or automation engineering degree or equivalent, accredited by PEO or other professional engineering body.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with PEO or equivalent.
  • Previous relevant work experience in EPCM, mining, or heavy industries.
  • Minimum 5 to 15 years of relevant working experience.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Leadership of discipline specific design teams; Collaborative team player.
  • Effective communicator; Positively reacts to change.
  • Knowledge of DCS, PLC, process controls, instrument, communication and network systems
  • Knowledge of power distribution, motor protection and controls.
  • Practical experience in mining, i.e. hoisting, shaft sinking, mine production and services, material handling, electrification, and digitalization of mining, would absolutely be an asset.
  • Knowledge of functional safety (SIL) or safety-related control systems would be an asset.
