Job Summary:

An Electrical Controls Designer in a plant is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing electrical control systems that are essential for operating and automating various equipment and machinery within the plant.

The role of an Electrical Controls Designer is crucial for optimizing the efficiency, reliability, and safety of plant operations through the effective design and implementation of electrical control systems.


Job Responsibilities:

Your supervisor may from time to time ask you to perform other related duties not specifically included in this job description. This job's key responsibilities include:

  • Designing Control Systems: create detailed designs for electrical control systems that regulate the operation of machinery, equipment, and processes within the plant. This includes selecting appropriate components such as sensors, actuators, controllers, and communication devices.
  • Developing Schematics and Diagrams: produce schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings to illustrate the configuration and connections of electrical components in the control system. These documents serve as guides for installation and troubleshooting.
  • Programming PLCs and HMIs: They write programs for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) to control and monitor the plant's machinery and processes. This involves using programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, or function block diagrams.
  • Integration with SCADA Systems: In larger plants, may integrate control systems with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for centralized monitoring and control of various processes across the plant.

Job Qualifications:

  • Education: A diploma or bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, control systems engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Work Experience: 5+ years of experience, including project management experience and a proven track record of successful control system design and implementation.
  • Experience with Robot programming and simulation (Motoman, ABB)
  • Experience with Omron and Allen Bradley plc is preferred.
  • Proficiency in electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar tools for creating schematics and layouts.
  • Experience with PLC programming languages such as ladder logic, structured text, or function block diagrams.
