Be a part of the initial team to grow and operate a regionally significant new underground mine development that is rapidly becoming the future of the iconic Red Lake gold mining district in Ontario, Canada.

Position Description:

Reporting to the General Manager, the Environment and Community Superintendent is responsible for indigenous and local community relations and environmental performance and compliance with relevant legislation related to our operations at Madsen Mine and other West Red Lake Gold Mines properties. The role provides leadership and direction to the community and environment team, plans, and manages all community and environment programs including oversight of specialist consultant services and ensures that all required environmental permitting, reporting and relevant information systems are in compliance. General responsibilities include administration of all programs and plans that may have an impact on the natural environment, such as wastewater management, hazardous waste management, surface and ground water quality monitoring programs, air emissions management, and closure/reclamation plan administration.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and direct the community and environment team by providing department goals and objectives.
  • Develop short, mid, and long-term plans related to community relations and environmental performance.
  • Provide environmental direction and input for the management team related to environmental permitting and operation of current infrastructure and development plans.
  • Develops, coordinates, and participates in the community engagement initiatives (local and aboriginal) and public consultation.
  • Oversee the operation of the water treatment plant, and monitoring of the tailings management facility, and related areas.
  • Oversee the development, implementation and coordination of permitting, compliance and monitoring programs for air, water, and land.
  • Lead the preparation and execution of regulatory reporting.
  • Coordination and management of environmental projects and technical studies as required.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and coordination of mine closure activities including planning and coordinating reclamation activities.
  • Coordinate fiscal responsibilities for the environmental department including monthly cost review and annual budget development.
  • Manage project activities as required (develop scope of work, selection of contractors, budget involvement, invoices and costs reports, etc).
  • Oversee the safety of environmental employees, consultants and contractors.
  • Comply with federal and provincial acts and regulations, and legal requirements of the facilities.
  • Adhere to all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental or natural sciences or related disciplines preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of community relations and environmental management experience preferably in the mining industry, with 3 years in a supervisory/management role.
  • Sound knowledge of environmental regulations, monitoring, sampling, and related documentation.
  • Solid foundation in provincial and federal legislation as it pertains to mining projects, including but not limited to agencies such as the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Environment and Climate Change Canada etc.
  • Solid understanding of community and environmental issues as related to new and historical mining operations.
  • Experience in and knowledge of indigenous community and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Strong project management abilities.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound analytical thinking, problem solving, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • A valid driver's license (G class) and the ability to safely operate snowmobiles, 4x4 vehicles, watercraft and ATVs as required.
