POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Health Services Program Manager, the RN shall provide care, leadership, and expertise, in accordance with Band policies. Specifically, the Nurse is responsible for ensuring that timely health services are provided to all families that Seabird Island Health Programs serve. As with all positions within the Health Department, the RN will be expected to support the success of other Health programs. This may include supporting Home and Community Care and providing other Nursing services in general.

This is a term Contract position until December 9th, 2024, with the possibility of extension.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Develop and implement nursing care plans and maintenance of accurate and up-to-date medical records. This includes recording patients' medical information and vital signs.
  • Assess patient health concerns and needs. Order, interpret and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients' conditions. This includes making necessary client referrals to other programs and health specialists as needed.
  • Administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent or disabled patients. This includes monitoring, recording, and reporting symptoms and changes in patients' conditions and modifying patient treatment plans as indicated by patient responses and conditions.
  • Consult and coordinate with supervisor and health care team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity. Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patient, friends, and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions as required.
  • Providing instant care during medical emergencies, like car accidents, burns, heart attacks and strokes.
  • Completes dressing changes and wound assessment.
  • Maintain nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies; using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Direct or coordinate infection control programs, advising, and consulting with specified personnel about necessary precautions.
  • Responsible for collection of statistical data in relation to program and services.
  • Assist with the direction and supervision of less skilled nursing/health care staff.
  • Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
  • Instruct patients, families, and other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention, childbirth, etc. and develop health improvement plans.
  • Transport clients as required.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor, Manager, Director, Executive Director, or Chief & Council.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education

  • Degree in Nursing, along with registration and licensing with BCCNM.
  • CPR level “C.”

Skills/Experience

  • Clinical skills, bedside manner, infection control, nursing skills, administering medication, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Direct experience in a First Nations health services position or community public health environment would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work with community members, health professionals, and co-workers as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Flexible and creative.
  • High professional and ethical standards holding up the BCCNM Professional and Practice Standards including maintaining client confidentiality.

Requirements:

  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Internet, and Email).
  • Excellent active listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó: lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver's License, Class 5.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Criminal Record Check.
