OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently looking to hire a Senior Regulatory Specialist to join our Team. The successful candidate will provide regulatory support to our Environmental teams, and have technical and client involvement with project management support across all target industries. The successful candidate will bring diverse experience and must enjoy a challenge and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary technical or management degree in a natural resource related field (environmental science, biology, ecology, geology, forestry, or geography) with a minimum of 10 years experience in environmental consulting or industry with expertise in regulatory consultancy
  • Previous experience as a key team member executing environmental related approvals, renewals, amendments, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the regulatory processes in Ontario, including (but not limited to) renewable sector regulations, compliance related regulations for industrial and commercial projects, energy projects, utilities, hydro, and linear developments. Regulatory experience in U.S jurisdictions or Western Canada is considered an asset
  • Experience in managing and executing various regulatory submissions from initial project citing to final approval.
  • Experience in supporting the development of supplemental information requests (SIR) and statement of concern (SOC) responses and correspondence with regulatory bodies at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels
  • Excellent technical writing abilities and verbal communication both internally and client facing
  • Business development experience is considered an asset for this position

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Management, Deliverables, Expectations and Relationships
  • Expert knowledge in executing regulatory applications, amendments, and renewals for a multitude of commercial and industrial projects (i.e., energy renewables/clean energy, utilities, linear developments, infrastructure, mining, etc.)
  • Support and manage as required technical teams on the execution of regulatory applications and compliance driven activities
  • Support and manage as required relationships with First Nations partners on projects and initiatives to meet partnership goals and Nation's directives
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for project execution of baseline environmental assessment programs associated with comprehensive regulatory submissions
  • Regulatory engagement / consultation of the SIR and SOC response process with regulatory agencies
  • Develop project-specific budgets and execution plans in alignment with project scope and strategy
  • Advise clients regarding strategy and approach for project work and delivery of technical documents and communicate progress
  • Personnel and Logistics Management
  • Provide support to senior, intermediate, and junior staff working primarily on projects and assignments under your care and control
  • Oversee and steward Vertex's safety policies and procedures for all staff working on your programs and projects
  • This role is expected to develop from a single contributor (initially) to a more comprehensive role with leadership requirements
  • Technical Requirements
  • Expert knowledge in regulatory process for projects within Ontario and federal regulations associated with large developments.
  • Working knowledge – understand, remain current, and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines, and standards as required by Vertex and client base
  • Ability to navigate regulatory requirements and provide design solutions, mitigation strategies, risk and opportunities, and anticipated timing to clients
  • Provide technical guidance to clients and staff or ensure clients are connected to a Vertex Technical Lead when required
  • Steward technical disciplines in scoping, methodology, and regulatory guidance to support project requirements and discipline specific challenges
  • Directing and managing the progression of technical reports for regulatory submissions
  • Management and oversight of information responses and SOC's required to address regulator or stakeholder concerns with project submissions or during the consultation process
  • Senior review and sign-off (in areas of practice) of technical reports
  • Other duties as directed by your Senior Manager
  • Business Development
  • Work with Business Development team, existing clients, and industry contacts to retain and grow the existing work portfolio and where feasible assist Vertex in growing their business into new client relationships and into new industry sectors
  • Collaborate with Other Senior staff and Senior Managers in developing systems, procedures, and tools to improve project outcomes and client experiences
  • Develop and review proposals and bid packages seeking new work and opportunities

LOCATION

This position will be based out of the Sherwood Park, Calgary, Regina, or Saskatoon locations.
