Summit Micro School | Toronto
Summit Micro School is a small, independent, neurodiversity-affirming school offering personalized, project-based education from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8. We are seeking a skilled, adaptable educator to lead our mixed-age Grades 2–4 classroom of 12 students.
This class requires an educator with practical experience supporting neurodivergent children. Students bring varied academic strengths, communication styles, and needs related to attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and peer relationships. The successful candidate will be friendly, calm and responsive, able to anticipate challenges, co-regulate with students, and maintain clear routines while adjusting instruction and expectations thoughtfully.
Our approach is flexible within structure. Strong relationships, explicit literacy and mathematics instruction, and interdisciplinary Project Based Learning help students build skills, independence, and confidence. Teachers have professional autonomy and work closely with colleagues and families.
SMS is an educational and supportive setting rather than a therapeutic program. Supporting students' regulation and participation is an integral part of the teaching role.
Responsibilities
- Connect with students in meaningful ways to build relationships and a positive classroom culture.
- Collaboratively plan and deliver interdisciplinary projects for a mixed-age classroom.
- Establish predictable routines, clear expectations, and practical supports for transitions, executive functioning, and participation.
- Support emotional regulation, social problem-solving, and safe, respectful interactions through relationship-based practices.
- Use observation and assessment to guide instruction and document progress.
- Incorporate outdoor learning, community outings, and shared physical education programming.
- Collaborate with colleagues and communicate thoughtfully with families.
Qualifications and Professional Fit
- Bachelor of Education; OCT certification is an asset but not required.
- Demonstrated experience teaching and supporting neurodivergent children, including students with autism, ADHD, learning differences, and anxiety.
- Strong foundational literacy and numeracy instruction, with the ability to support varied learning levels.
- Practical understanding of co-regulation, executive functioning, and proactive classroom supports.
- Experience with project-based or inquiry-based learning.
- Calm judgment, strong organization, flexibility, and a collaborative approach.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to complete.
We are looking for someone who recognizes strengths, understands that students may need explicit support to meet expectations, and can balance academic challenge with emotional safety.
How to Apply
Please provide a detailed cover letter describing your experience supporting neurodivergent learners and provide an example of how you have adapted classroom routines or instruction to help students participate and learn.
Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
Summit Micro School is committed to equitable and inclusive hiring. We welcome applicants with diverse identities, perspectives, and lived experiences.
