Senior Financial Analyst – Equipment Accounting

Six-month temporary position with potential to become full-time

Reports to: Controller

Summary

The Senior Financial Analyst supports the accuracy and readiness of the equipment division's financial records. This role focuses on daily reconciliations, percentage-of-completion accounting for equipment projects, and the schedules and analysis needed for a timely year-end close and audit. The analyst will work closely with Finance, project teams, and Operations to resolve discrepancies, maintain reliable project forecasts, and identify issues before month-end.

What You'll Do

Daily accounting and reconciliations

  • Reconcile assigned general ledger, subledger, intercompany, and equipment project accounts on a regular basis; investigate and clear discrepancies promptly.
  • Monitor project costs, billings, customer deposits, holdbacks, work in progress, and unbilled or deferred amounts to ensure they are recorded in the correct project and period.
  • Review transactions for coding, completeness, and cutoff, and prepare correcting journal entries where required.
  • Maintain reconciliation trackers, document outstanding items, and follow through with account owners to resolve them.
  • Work with Operations and project teams to confirm project status, delivery milestones, costs incurred, and remaining work.

Equipment projects and percentage of completion

  • Maintain project accounting schedules, including contract value, approved changes, costs incurred, estimated costs to complete, forecast margin, billings, and revenue recognized.
  • Calculate and support percentage-of-completion revenue and cost recognition in accordance with the company's accounting policies.
  • Review changes in estimated project costs and margins, investigate significant variances, and escalate potential project losses or other accounting issues.
  • Reconcile project schedules to the general ledger and ensure consistent treatment of deposits, holdbacks, accrued revenue, and billings.
  • Coordinate with the Service team to identify startup or commissioning work transferred from Equipment, confirm the remaining cost and completion responsibilities, and support the related accounting.
  • Improve the completeness and consistency of project files, estimates, and supporting documentation.

Month-end and year-end readiness

  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations within the close timetable.
  • Prepare balance sheet schedules and supporting analysis for assigned equipment accounts.
  • Review open projects and aged reconciling items before year-end, and drive resolution with the relevant teams.
  • Prepare clear audit-ready working papers for project revenue, work in progress, deposits, holdbacks, fixed assets, and other assigned balances.
  • Respond to audit requests, assemble supporting documentation, and help resolve questions and proposed adjustments.
  • Identify gaps in accounting support or processes and recommend practical improvements to strengthen the year-end close.

What You Need

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • CPA designation or progress toward a CPA designation is preferred.
  • At least three years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on reconciliations and month-end close.
  • Experience with project accounting, job costing, work in progress, or percentage-of-completion accounting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in an equipment, construction, field service, or multi-branch business is an asset.
  • Strong Excel skills and the ability to build and maintain accurate, well-supported schedules.
  • ERP experience; Microsoft Dynamics 365 experience is an asset.
  • Sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to investigate discrepancies through to resolution.
  • Ability to work with Finance and Operations, explain financial issues clearly, and meet close and audit deadlines.

Working Conditions

  • Six-month temporary assignment with potential for a full-time opportunity based on business needs and performance.
  • Occasional overtime may be required during month-end, year-end, and audit periods.
  • Work is primarily performed using a computer, with regular collaboration across Finance and Operations.
