Shift Work Required: NoDuties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor, this position will be responsible for:
- Providing legal services to the Corporation in all areas of the law as necessary, with an emphasis on real estate and corporate/commercial law;
- Representing the City in real estate and corporate transactions;
- Providing legal support to the Corporation in its capacity as service manager in the administration of various programs and related funding from upper levels of government;
- Drafting agreements, by-laws, policies and reports to CAO and Council;
- Preparing legal opinions for the guidance of City Council and Administration;
- Preparation of a variety of legal documents, including agreements, leases, contracts etc., in conjunction with other parties to obtain and clarify background information, and ensure regulatory and legislative requirements are met;
- Providing additional legal services to the Corporation as may be required, which may include representation before the courts, administrative boards and tribunals;
- Performing Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporate Health and Safety Program; and
- Performing other related duties as required.
- Must have a JD, LLB or equivalent and two (2) years of broad legal experience after being called to the Bar, with emphasis on real estate and corporate/commercial law;
- Must be in and maintain good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
- A basic knowledge of municipal law and the Municipal Act, 2001 would be an asset;
- Must have the ability to travel to off site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current valid and lawful driver's license is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver's abstract as a condition of employment;
- Must be fully computer literate and well versed in the MS Office suite, particularly Outlook and Word;
- Must be able to effectively use Westlaw@Carswell and Internet resources for legal research;
- Must have strong interpersonal, negotiation, and verbal and written communication skills;
- Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work.
- The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a sedentary level of work.
