About the Opportunity

Our client is a growing international fire safety engineering consultancy providing specialist services in building code consulting, fire safety engineering, and risk management across a broad range of building types and complex projects.

As the Canadian team continues to expand, they are seeking an experienced Senior Building Code Consultant to join their fire safety engineering practice.

Role Overview

The Senior Building Code Consultant will lead and manage complex building code and fire safety projects, providing expert technical advice to clients, design teams, and regulatory authorities.

This opportunity is well suited to an experienced consultant who can work independently, manage multiple projects, mentor junior team members, and provide high-level building code and life safety guidance throughout the design and construction process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead building code consulting assignments across commercial, residential, institutional, industrial, and mixed-use developments.

  • Conduct detailed reviews of architectural and engineering drawings for compliance with applicable building and fire codes.

  • Interpret and apply the Ontario Building Code (OBC), National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), and other applicable codes and standards.

  • Undertake building code audits, compliance reviews, and due diligence assessments.

  • Prepare building code compliance reports, technical memoranda, and supporting documentation.

  • Develop and support Alternative Solutions and performance-based design approaches where required.

  • Identify code compliance issues and provide practical technical solutions.

  • Liaise with architects, engineers, developers, contractors, clients, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to meet project deliverables and schedules.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and consultants.

  • Manage multiple projects independently while maintaining high technical and client service standards.

  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and project coordination meetings.

  • Support the continued growth of the Canadian consulting practice where appropriate.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Approximately 5–15 years of relevant experience in building code consulting, fire engineering, fire and life safety consulting, or a related field.

  • Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and/or National Building Code of Canada.

  • Demonstrated experience with:

    • Plan and drawing reviews

    • Building code compliance assessments

    • Building code audits

    • Alternative Solutions

    • Technical report preparation

    • Code interpretation

    • Client and authority coordination

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Engineering, Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a related discipline is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Strong technical writing and report preparation skills.

  • Excellent verbal communication and client-facing capabilities.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and oversee or mentor other team members.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Eligibility to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within a fire engineering, building code consulting, architectural, or multidisciplinary engineering consultancy.

  • Experience working with municipalities, building officials, fire departments, and other Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

  • Experience on large, complex, or technically challenging developments.

  • Familiarity with performance-based fire engineering principles.

  • Professional designation or progress toward a relevant designation is considered an asset.

  • Previous experience mentoring junior consultants or managing project teams.
