Reefer Technician | Truck & Trailer Refrigeration | 4-Night Week | Rocky View County, AB
This role may also be known as: Transport Refrigeration Technician, Reefer Mechanic, Truck and Trailer Refrigeration Technician, Refrigeration Unit Technician
What if your work week ended on Thursday night, every week? This role runs Monday to Thursday, 4:00 PM to 2:30 AM, which means a three-day weekend is simply part of the job.
You will be the technician who keeps the cold chain moving. Every refrigeration unit you diagnose and repair gets a load back on the road safely, and roughly 70 percent of your time is spent doing what good reefer techs enjoy most: troubleshooting with scanners, test equipment and on-board computers, chasing down codes and leaks, and getting units running right.
This is a shop that invests in its technicians. You get money toward your tools and boots, support to keep learning, and real opportunities to step into leadership and training as you grow.
Why This Opportunity Is Different
Most night shift roles ask you to give up your weekends. This one gives you three of them every week. Pay starts at $33 to $37 an hour depending on experience, and a $1.50 an hour night shift premium sits on top of that. You will work in a structured, KPI-driven shop with a dedicated parts department, clear PM guidelines and a Shop Supervisor you report to directly. Experienced technicians coach and mentor apprentices and journeymen, and the role is designed to position you for more senior roles within shop operations. There is no travel, unless you choose to attend training.
What You'll Be Doing
Diagnosing reefer malfunctions using scanners, electronic test equipment and on-board computers
Downloading unit data when a code or alarm appears, and installing software revisions and OptiSet where applicable
Inspecting fans, blowers, lines, nozzles, exhaust, belts, pulleys, batteries, filters, coils and wiring so units stay in peak working order
Detecting and repairing refrigerant leaks, and removing, repairing and installing components and units on trucks and trailers
Reading schematics, performing equipment wiring and using welding, hand and power tools safely
Building repair plans and detailed reports, and explaining required work and cost estimates to customers, including owner operators
Completing scheduled preventative maintenance and safety inspections on time and to standard
Working with the parts team on kitting, parts requests, warranty claims and core returns
Keeping accurate work orders, unit hours and SRT time so billing, inventory and KPIs stay accurate
Coaching and mentoring apprentices and contributing ideas to continuous improvement
What We're Looking For
High school diploma
Ozone Depletion Prevention certification
Two to three years of experience servicing refrigeration units on trucks and trailers
Specialized diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, including reading schematics and performing equipment wiring
Good mechanical knowledge of commercial motor vehicles and trailers
Proficiency with hand and power tools, welding equipment and diagnostic systems
Understanding of fleet maintenance processes, parts inventory, kitting, and OEM and warranty processing
Computer proficiency with MS Office and proprietary engine and component software
Strong organization, attention to detail and the ability to work independently under strict timelines
Good physical strength, grip strength, dexterity, flexibility and endurance
OE training or certification with Thermo King, Carrier Transicold or similar is strongly preferred
Trade school certification, journeyperson status, OEM training or heavy equipment mechanical knowledge is an asset
Compensation & Work Model
$33 to $37 per hour depending on experience, plus a $1.50 per hour night shift premium.
$500 tool allowance, $300 boot card and educational incentives.
Work model: Onsite.
Schedule: Monday to Thursday, night shift, 4:00 PM to 2:30 AM.
Location & Travel
Onsite at the shop in Rocky View County, Alberta, just east of Calgary. No travel is required, apart from optional training at your own choice.
