THE ROLE:

The Director of Engineering is responsible for ensuring that all hotel equipment is properly serviced and functional, that the hotel grounds and facilities are maintained, and that training is provided for each department as to the proper operation and maintenance of departmental equipment.

ACTIVITIES:

The duties and responsibilities for the Director of Engineering include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Approach all encounters with guests and employees in a friendly, service-oriented manner.
  • Responsible for overseeing maintenance, repair, and emergency responses for the building by the Maintenance department, Grounds department and appropriate outside vendors/contractors
  • Maintain scheduling to complete work with minimal disruptions to guest service and maximize productivity
  • Preparing and controlling the annual/monthly maintenance budgets and accurate forecasts
  • All research and preparation of purchase orders, purchasing, implementation and related tracking
  • Assisting in the preparation of Maintenance Capital Plan. Co-ordinate renovations and Maintenance related capital projects within the framework, budgets and time limits established
  • Plan, implement and monitor the Hotel's Preventative Maintenance Programs to maintain guest rooms, mechanical equipment, outlets and public areas in appropriate condition
  • Ensure all physical operations of the Hotel, including refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing, water treatment and electric systems are maintained in a neat, clean and safe fashion
  • Ensure the hotel complies with all Government regulations pertaining to building code requirements, insurance, loss prevention, health, fire and life safety programs
  • Reviewing ongoing service contracts for contractor performance and competitive pricing
  • Monitors the “Building Management System” that controls guest rooms and public areas
  • Monitor energy management to ensure cost effective use of utilities and identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption
  • Management of hotel's fleet of vehicles
  • Maintaining close and effective working relationship with all other departments, owner representatives and external contractors
  • Develops and motivates the Maintenance team. Establishes quantitative standards of performance and utilizes leadership skills to fully maximize department's capabilities
  • Oversees safety standards, WHMIS training, recruiting and training of the Maintenance Department
  • Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Algonquin standards, as required by scheduling, which will vary according to the needs of the hotel.
  • Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, which include wearing the proper business attire and nametag when working.
  • Comply at all times with Algonquin standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations

COMPETENCIES WE ARE SEEKING:

  • 4+ years experience as a Building Manager or Assistant Building Manager of multi faceted building complex (hotel/golf or service environment preferred)
  • Experience leading a diverse team of maintenance technicians.
  • Degree/diploma/certificate in Engineering or trade certification on Building Management is an asset
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret Engineering and Building Blue Prints
  • Knowledgeable in all regulations such as building codes, fire and health department requirements
  • 4th class or better boiler certificate considered an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills: highly organized, results oriented with the ability to be flexible, and to work well under pressure, strong level of initiative required.
  • Strong business background an asset.
  • Exceptional guest service approach and a guest service/hospitality focus.
  • Strong technical abilities with Microsoft programs and familiarization with computerized maintenance systems IE transcendent an asset.
  • Ability to review, assess and modify work as needed to ensure continual result focused progress.
  • Ability to handle multiple complex projects concurrently with a focus on results
