Position summary

The Industrial Painter applies protective coatings and paints to pipes, fittings, tanks and fabricated components, delivering high-quality finishes that meet company and customer specifications. The role owns coating mixing, application and film-thickness checks, and works closely with sandblasters and Quality to meet production deadlines.

Key responsibilities

• Read and follow work orders, drawings and coating specifications and product data sheets.
• Inspect prepared surfaces before painting for cleanliness, profile and defects; report issues to the supervisor.
• Mix paints and coatings to specification; track batch numbers, pot life and induction times.
• Apply industrial coatings, paints and protective finishes using airless, conventional and other spray equipment, and by brush or roller for touch-up.
• Check wet and dry film thickness and record results; monitor temperature, humidity and cure times.
• Inspect finished coatings for runs, sags, holidays and other defects, and repair as required.
• Mask parts, and set up, clean and maintain spray equipment and the paint booth.
• Keep the work area clean and organized (5S) and hand over job status at shift change.
• Identify and report equipment issues or quality concerns.
• Collaborate with team members to meet production deadlines.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Health & safety responsibilities

As a worker under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), the Painter must:

• Follow WHMIS requirements: read safety data sheets (SDS) and labels for every coating, thinner and solvent.
• Wear required PPE at all times, including respiratory protection, coveralls, gloves, eye protection and CSA safety footwear (PPE provided; fit testing provided).
• Use booth ventilation and exhaust as required; never spray in an unventilated area.
• Control ignition sources near flammable coatings and solvents; bond and ground containers and equipment.
• Follow lockout/tagout and confined space procedures where they apply.
• Report spills, hazards, near misses, injuries and equipment defects to the supervisor immediately.
• Participate in safety training, JHSC initiatives and workplace inspections.

Qualifications

Required

• Experience with spray painting equipment (airless, conventional, etc.), or willingness to learn.
• Ability to read and interpret work instructions, technical specifications and product data sheets.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Able to wear a respirator and full protective gear for extended periods, including in confined spaces.
• Able to work rotating shifts and overtime as scheduled.
• Commitment to workplace safety and compliance.

Preferred

• Previous industrial painting or coating experience.
• Experience measuring film thickness with wet and dry film gauges.
• Experience in mining, manufacturing or heavy industrial environments.
• Forklift or overhead crane experience.

Equivalent experience gained anywhere is considered; Canadian experience is not required.

Working conditions and physical demands

• Industrial paint area with exposure to fumes, solvent odours and noise.
• Standing, bending, kneeling and working in awkward positions, including inside or around large components.
• Frequent lifting up to 23 kg (50 lb) unaided; heavier loads with hoists or lift aids.
• Rotating shifts, with overtime including occasional weekends during peak demand.
