Metal Sorter

A Metal Sorter identifies, separates, and prepares different types of metal for recycling or processing. This role involves inspecting materials, operating sorting equipment, maintaining a safe work area, and ensuring metals meet quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Sort ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel.
• Identify metals using visual inspection, magnets, tools, or testing equipment.
• Remove contaminants and separate materials according to grade and company standards.
• Operate conveyors, scales, balers, forklifts, and other processing equipment when authorized.
• Weigh, label, record, and move sorted materials to designated storage areas.
• Inspect incoming loads and report hazardous, prohibited, or unusual materials.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Follow safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment.
• Assist with loading, unloading, and general yard or warehouse duties.
• Report equipment problems and material-quality issues to a supervisor.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
• Previous recycling, warehouse, manufacturing, or general labour experience is an asset.
• Ability to recognize common metal types or willingness to learn.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform repetitive physical work.
• Comfortable working indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety.

Preferred Qualifications

• Forklift certification is an asset but may not be required.
