Intermediate/Senior Bridge Engineer

What is the role?

As an Intermediate/Senior Bridge Engineer, you will play a key role in the planning, design, evaluation, and rehabilitation of transportation structures across Ontario. Working closely with Senior Engineers and Project Managers, you will contribute to a variety of bridge and structural engineering projects, applying sound engineering judgment to develop practical, innovative, and client-focused solutions.

You will apply your engineering expertise to develop design solutions, prepare technical reports and contract documents, perform engineering analyses and field reviews, and coordinate with project team members, sub-consultants, and clients. In this role, you will manage assigned project tasks and deliverables while continuing to build your technical and project management capabilities. You will also have opportunities to support and mentor junior engineers and designers as you progress within the Structures Division.

In this role, your duties and responsibilities will include:

Design & Technical Work

• Contribute to the design of transportation structures (such as bridges, structural culverts, retaining walls, high mast poles, and overhead sign supports) under the guidance of a Senior Engineer.
• Assist with the design and rehabilitation of existing transportation structures, applying established engineering practices and contributing to the development of practical and effective solutions.
• Prepare and support the development of Structural Design Reports, Structural Evaluation Reports, calculations, drawings, and other technical documentation.
• Support the preparation and review of contract documents, including special provisions, tender item lists, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and working day estimates.
• Provide technical support to project teams, sub-consultants, and stakeholders, contributing to the resolution of technical issues and coordinating with senior staff on more complex challenges.
• Conduct engineering analyses, calculations, and design reviews to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.

Project Management

• Support project managers and senior engineers with project coordination, scheduling, and day-to-day project delivery activities.
• Assist in the preparation of project specifications, quantity take-offs, cost estimates, and working day estimates to support project planning and execution.
• Manage assigned project tasks and deliverables within established scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
• Participate in client meetings, site visits, and project discussions, providing technical support as required.

Quality, Health and Safety

• Apply quality control and quality assurance procedures to assigned work and participate in internal design reviews.
• Comply with all applicable health and safety policies to maintain a safe working environment.
• Report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or hazards to the direct supervisor promptly.

Professional Development

• Continuously grow professional skills and knowledge through training sessions, seminars, workshops, and involvement in professional associations to stay updated on the latest trends, software, and technology.
• Exposure to other project work within the scope of the Structures Division.

The qualifications you need:

• Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), with a minimum of 5 years of experience as a P.Eng.
• 10+ years of total professional experience in the design, evaluation, and rehabilitation of bridge, transportation, or transit-related structures.
• Proven experience managing projects for MTO, TTC, Metrolinx, or municipal clients is a strong asset.
• Strong knowledge of CSA S6 (CHBDC), CSA A23, CSA S16, OBC, OPSS, and MTO Structural and Rehabilitation Manuals.
• Advanced proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000, MIDAS Civil, CSiBridge, MathCAD, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
• Demonstrated success in project management and coordination, delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with experience mentoring junior engineers and leading multidisciplinary teams.
• Valid Ontario Class G driver's license and willingness to conduct site inspections as required.
• Commitment to continuous learning and maintaining current technical expertise.
