Western Community College has been a pioneer in offering various healthcare programs. WCC invites applications from eligible and experienced candidates for the position of Instructor for the Medical Laboratory Assistant Program.
Position Overview
Job Title: MLA Instructor - Surrey Campus
WCC is currently seeking qualified and experienced Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Instructors for our Surrey campus. The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction, supporting student learning and academic progress, and contributing to the development of students' knowledge and practical skills in accordance with applicable industry and professional standards.
- Work Location: Surrey Campus, British Columbia (In-person)
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Hours: Up to 5 hours per day / 25 hours per week
- Initial Contract Period: October 26, 2026, to May, 2027
- Initial Employment Type: Part-time, Fixed-Term Contract, with the potential for extension, renewal, or transition to an ongoing/open contract for future cohorts, subject to program needs, enrollment, performance, and mutual agreement.
Scheduling Note: The weekly hours may vary, and there may be occasional gaps or weeks with reduced instructional hours during the contract period. Certain specialized short courses or components of the program, such as ECG and MLT-specific instruction, may be delivered by instructors with the appropriate specialized qualifications.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in the development, review, and delivery of curriculum in alignment with BCSLS competencies for Medical Laboratory Assistants.
- Deliver engaging, effective, and student-centered instruction to support a positive learning experience.
- Provide instruction in both theoretical and practical components of the Medical Laboratory Assistant Program, as applicable.
- Participate in the academic progress of students through ongoing evaluation, assessment, and constructive feedback.
- Monitor student performance and provide appropriate academic support to promote student success.
- Maintain accurate student attendance, assessment, and academic records as required.
- Collaborate with academic and administrative stakeholders to support a high-quality learning environment.
- Maintain a professional, respectful, inclusive, and supportive classroom and laboratory environment.
- Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement initiatives as required.
- Stay current with developments in the medical laboratory field and incorporate relevant industry practices into teaching.
- Contribute to and support a healthy, collegial, and scholarly work environment through professional practice and ongoing professional development.
- Perform other instructional and academic duties related to the program as required.
Qualifications
- Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) with more than 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Previous teaching, training, or instructional experience in the medical laboratory field is preferred.
- For the teaching laboratory component, the required qualification is Certified Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT).
Contract Type and Future Opportunities
The positions will initially be offered as fixed-term, part-time contracts for the current cohort, as outlined above. However, WCC intends to continue the instructor engagement for future cohorts, subject to student enrollment, program needs, performance, and mutual agreement.
Depending on program requirements and enrollment, the engagement may be extended, renewed, or transitioned to an ongoing/open contract by mutual agreement.
